Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
Pulling up to our pet-friendly bungalow right on the water’s edge in Fishbourne, near Ryde, we were gobsmacked. Just 2.9 miles from Ryde’s buzz but worlds away, it’s this cracking spot nestled into the creek with views that make you forget the mainland exists. The deck under those ancient oak trees? Pure magic – we spotted red squirrels darting about within minutes, tails flicking like they owned the place. No car needed here; boats dock practically on the doorstep, which felt dead luxurious after our earlier faff. Inside, it’s all spacious living areas flooded with light, dead cosy for a chilled couple’s break. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local Wight wine on the sofa, the dog (our daft Labrador, Monty) sniffing every corner like he’d hit the jackpot. First evening, we wandered down to the dock for some crab fishing – armed with bacon bits and a bucket, laughing as Monty tried to ‘help’ by paddling in. Caught a few beauties, boiled ’em up simple-style with butter and lemon. Simple pleasures, eh? That’s the vibe here – no grand plans, just creek-side lounging. Next day, we ambled the short path to Fishbourne’s quiet spots, spotting herons and the odd seal bobbing past. Popped into Ryde for fish and chips from a proper greasy spoon – wrapped in paper, eaten on the beach with sand between our toes. Back at the bungalow, chaos ensued when Monty chased a squirrel onto the deck, knocking over my deckchair mid-snooze. I ended up in a heap, covered in crisps, while my partner howled with laughter. Cottage life, innit? Those little mishaps make it. Evenings blurred into barbecues on the deck, watching ferries glide in from Portsmouth, stars popping out over the creek. One quiet moment, sat there with a cuppa as the sun dipped, I had a proper think – we’re always rushing about, but this place stripped it back. Just us, the water, and Monty snoring. No signal stress, no schedules. A gentle nudge that sometimes the best holidays are the ones where you do bugger all but breathe. If you’re after that relaxed family-couple escape – pets in tow, chaos optional – this waterfront retreat’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return. |
