Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight – or rather, the ferry crossing that nearly did me in. We’d splashed out on a spontaneous long weekend, piling into the car with a boot full of crisps, books and not much of a plan. But as we queued at Lymington, the heavens opened, and by the time we rolled onto the Wightlink ferry, I’d managed to spill an entire thermos of tea down my lap. Typical me, starting the holiday with soggy trousers and a sheepish grin. Still, as the Solent slipped by and Yarmouth’s coastline came into view, that little mishap faded. There’s something about those chalky cliffs and bobbing boats that just whispers “relax, you daft sod.”

Pulling up to the cottage just outside Yarmouth, my heart did a little flip of anticipation – would it live up to the photos? Blimey, it exceeded them. A cosy detached haven with a thatched roof and all the charm of a proper Wight bolthole, it sat snug in its own slice of garden paradise, mere minutes from the Solent’s edge. We tumbled inside, dumped the bags, and within seconds were kicking off our shoes, grinning like kids.

From that moment, the joy was in doing precisely nothing – or as close to it as you can get without feeling guilty. Our days blurred into a glorious haze of laziness. Mornings kicked off with lazy brews on the patio, watching the birds flit about the garden’s wildflower patches. It was one of those spots where the lawn rolled gently down to a hedge that framed glimpses of the estuary – perfect for plonking a chair and cracking open a paperback. I devoured three novels that week, the kind of page-turners you forget to eat lunch over, with only the distant cry of gulls for company.

Afternoons? More of the same, but better. We’d wander the garden paths, picking a few ripe tomatoes from the veggie patch (a happy surprise) and slicing them onto doorstep sandwiches eaten under the apple tree. No rush, no itinerary – just the sun warming our faces and the soft hum of bees. One day, I caught myself staring at a butterfly for a full five minutes, mesmerised by its lazy flutter. Who does that? Me, apparently, on holiday. It was a gentle nudge, that moment: life back home is all hustle, deadlines and doom-scrolling. Here, time stretched like warm toffee, reminding me it’s fine to just be.

Evenings sealed the deal. As the light dipped golden over Yarmouth’s marshes, we’d fire up the barbecue – nothing fancy, just sausages and a cheeky bottle of plonk – then flop into the lounge with its squishy sofas and wood-burner glow. Board games half-started, then abandoned for more reading by lamplight. The cottage wrapped around us like a hug, every nook begging you to linger.

Looking back, that’s the magic of a Wight cottage break: no epic hikes or tourist traps, just permission to slow right down. We left feeling recharged, trousers dry, and already plotting a return. If you’re after proper downtime, this is your spot.
