Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight last autumn – it was one of those crisp October mornings where the leaves were turning all golden and the air had that proper nip to it. Me and the missus piled into the car at stupid o’clock, fog lights on, aiming for the Red Funnel ferry from Southampton. Of course, halfway there, disaster struck: I’d forgotten to check the tyres, and we got a puncture right on the motorway. Cue 45 minutes of me faffing about with the spare while she sipped her thermos of tea, tutting like a proper EastEnders character. We made the ferry with minutes to spare, hearts racing, but honestly, that little drama just amped up the anticipation. By the time we chugged across the Solent, the sun breaking through the mist over Cowes, I was buzzing – autumn on the Wight always feels magical, doesn’t it?

Pulling up to the property, a cosy terraced cottage tucked away in a quiet spot, my first impressions were spot on. It had this welcoming vibe, with pumpkin lanterns flickering on the doorstep and the garden glowing in those soft, slanting rays you only get in late October. The sea breeze carried that salty tang, mixed with woodsmoke from nearby chimneys – pure seasonal bliss. We dumped the bags and cracked open a window; the view down to the estuary shimmered like a painting, all burnished oranges and russets.

That time of year shaped everything, really. Mornings started with steaming mugs of builder’s tea on the patio, wrapped in blankets as the dew sparkled on the hedges. We wandered down to Cowes Parade, no more than a ten-minute stroll, where the waterfront was alive with folks in wellies, sipping hot chocolate from the kiosks. The sea was a moody grey-green, waves slapping gently against the pebbled shore, and the air so fresh it cleared your sinuses in seconds. No summer crowds, just us and a few dog-walkers dodging the occasional squall – hilarious when one hit and we legged it back, laughing like kids, coats flapping.

Afternoons were for gentle rambles along the coastal path towards Gurnard, leaves crunching underfoot and blackberries still hanging on for dear life (we scoffed handfuls, tart as anything). The low sun cast long shadows over Egypt Point, turning the cliffs into this dramatic silhouette – proper Instagram gold, though I’m more of a point-and-shoot man. Evenings in the cottage were heaven: roasting chestnuts we’d foraged, then hunkering down by the fire with a bottle of red, watching the twilight fade over the boats bobbing in the marina. One night, a proper harvest moon rose, huge and amber, flooding the room with light – felt like we’d stepped into a fairy tale.

Looking back, that puncture was a blessing in disguise. It made me slow down, appreciate the season’s quiet magic – the way autumn wraps the Isle of Wight in this cosy hush, before winter bites. We left feeling recharged, already plotting a return. If you’re after a proper getaway that lets the time of year do the talking, this is it.
