Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
I’ll never forget the drive over to the Isle of Wight for our little getaway – my wife and I, just the two of us, escaping the daily grind for some proper downtime. We’d splashed out on the ferry from Portsmouth, which was smooth enough, but then came the small drama: halfway down those twisty island lanes towards Ventnor, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and directed us straight into a narrow farm track. Cue me reversing like a pro (or so I told myself) while dodging a very unimpressed cow staring us down. We burst out laughing, windows down, sea breeze whipping in. By the time we pulled up, hearts racing a bit, the anticipation was buzzing – would this be the cosy retreat we’d dreamed of?

First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those classic Victorian terraced cottages you see dotted along Ventnor’s seafront, all whitewashed charm with a nod to its seaside heritage. We tumbled through the door, bags everywhere, and straight away it felt like home – mismatched cushions on the sofa, a telly in the corner for rainy afternoons, and that faint whiff of salty air sneaking in from the open windows. No grand lobby or anything flash; just simple, lived-in loveliness perfect for a couple like us, rediscovering each other without the kids underfoot.

The next few days melted into this blissful rhythm of cottage life chaos, the kind that’s equal parts relaxing and ridiculous. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the little patio, brewing tea in the quirky kitchen (note to self: always check the toaster settings unless you fancy smoked kippers). We’d amble down to Ventnor Beach, just a stone’s throw away, kicking off shoes for a paddle in the shallows. The water’s bracing, mind – sends you hopping about like excited meerkats, giggling at how daft we looked. One afternoon, we packed a picnic and hiked the short path up to Ventnor Downs, sprawling out on the grass with cheese rolls and a thermos, watching ferries chug across the Solent. Pure bliss, that wide-open sky making you feel tiny and free.

Evenings were for lazy wanders along the promenade, grabbing fish and chips from a takeaway that wrapped ’em in proper newspaper, vinegar dripping everywhere. Back at the cottage, we’d crack open a bottle of wine, stick on some old tunes, and cook up pasta disasters – mine always ends up gluey, hers miraculously perfect. There was this one moment of gentle self-reflection, sat by the window as the sun dipped behind the downs: we’d been together 15 years, yet here we were, holding hands like teenagers, chatting about nothing and everything. Life’s too short not to chase these simple pleasures, isn’t it? No schedules, no screens (well, mostly), just us and the island’s gentle hum.

Of course, chaos crept in – a rogue seagull nicked my sandwich mid-bite on the beach, and we spent half an hour chasing a washing line that decided to tango in the wind. But that’s the joy of it: unpolished, real, and utterly restorative. Leaving felt bittersweet, but we’re already plotting a return. If you’re after a chilled couple’s break, Ventnor’s cottage vibe hits the spot every time.
