Our holiday in Isle Of Wight
Pulling up to the place just 1.5 miles from Freshwater village felt like stumbling into a hug after all that. It’s this charming converted granary right in the heart of a family-run riding stables, surrounded by rolling countryside that’s just begging to be explored on horseback. We parked up easily off-road, grabbed our bags, and stepped through the door with massive grins – first impressions? Spot on. Instantly cosy, like it was waiting just for us. The living/dining area wrapped us up straight away: plush seating, a telly for a cheeky Netflix binge, and that electric fire flickering invitingly even though it was still mild out. I plonked the kettle on in the well-equipped kitchen while my other half set the table for a slap-up supper of local fish and chips we’d nabbed en route. Romantic? Aye, in our scruffy post-ferry way. We didn’t waste time – next morning, after a brew and toast, we were out hacking through the scenic West Wight trails on horses from the stables. Nothing beats trotting past those lush fields and peeking at the coast, with gulls wheeling overhead. Lunch was a picnic by the beach at Freshwater Bay, just a short drive away – sandy toes, pasties from the village bakery, and not a cloud in sight. Afternoon? A gentle wander along the cliffs at Compton Bay, spotting fossils in the waves and dodging the odd cheeky cow wandering the downs. It’s all so unspoilt here, proper peaceful, far from the mainland hustle. Mind you, that first-night chaos had me reflecting a bit over a glass of wine by the fire. I’m always rushing, packing too much, fretting about the what-ifs – but arriving in a flap made the calm hit harder. This spot’s perfect for couples craving a tranquil escape; it strips away the nonsense and lets you breathe. No wonder we’re already plotting a return – mishaps and all, it was the best reset. |
