Our holiday in Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to our little holiday spot in Kent – we’d packed the car with enough books and snacks to last a siege, but halfway there, just past Ashford, the sat nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a merry dance through some narrow lanes that looked like they hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. We ended up laughing our heads off as we reversed out of a muddy farm track, me swearing I’d never trust technology again. But honestly, that little mishap just built the anticipation – by the time we crested the hill and spotted the vineyard stretching out below, I was grinning like a kid at Christmas.

Pulling up to this gorgeous barn conversion on a working vineyard felt like stepping into someone’s dream. It’s the sort of place that’s been beautifully thought out down to the last detail, with eco touches like a ground source heat pump and solar panels keeping things green. Sleeping four in beautifully furnished rooms, it’s got a cosy wood burning stove, timbered vaulted ceilings, and those stunning views over Romney Marsh and the owner’s vines that make you want to pinch yourself. We were smitten from the off – the fully enclosed garden with its hot tub whispering promises of lazy evenings, and that footpath straight out the door to the 14th century Ferry Inn for a pint and some Rye Bay scallops if we fancied a gentle amble.

But the real joy? Doing sod all. After years of rushing about like headless chickens, this was our chance to slam on the brakes. Our first morning, I cracked open a pot of tea, fired up the wood burner, and sank into the squishy sofa with a dog-eared novel I’d been meaning to read for ages. The light streamed in through those big windows, picking out the vines swaying in the breeze, and time just... stretched. No schedules, no emails pinging – just the hum of the countryside and the odd bird doing circuits outside.

We’d potter out to the garden mid-afternoon, flop on the loungers with a GandT, and watch the clouds scoot over the Marsh. The hot tub became our daily ritual – bubbling away as the sun dipped low, turning us into wrinkled prunes while we chatted about nothing much. One evening, as I soaked there staring at the stars popping out one by one, I had this quiet moment of self-reflection: when did life get so frantic? Here, with the vineyard’s earthy scent in the air and not a care in the world, I realised slowing down isn’t lazy – it’s blooming essential. We did venture out once along the Saxon Shore Way for a breezy walk, but even that was more excuse for fresh air than proper exercise.

Days blurred into a blissful haze of reading, napping, and the odd vineyard meander to stretch the legs. No need for big adventures when paradise is right here – just us, the barn, and the sheer delight of switching off. If you’re after proper RandR in Kent, this is the ticket. We left feeling utterly recharged, already plotting our return.
