Our holiday in Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Canterbury – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from London turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through every narrow lane in Kent like it had a personal grudge. Then, just as we neared the outskirts, a rogue pheasant shot across the road, forcing me into an emergency swerve that sent my mate’s crisps flying everywhere. Chips ahoy, indeed. By the time we trundled up to this gorgeous riverside cottage, we were knackered, laughing hysterically, and covered in a fine dusting of Tyrrells.

Pulling into the drive, though, all that chaos melted away. There it was, this three-bed retreat perched right on the River Stour, about two miles from Canterbury’s buzz. First impressions? Bloody marvellous – or should I say, utterly enchanting. The deck overlooks the gently flowing water, with countryside paths snaking off into the distance like an invitation to forget the world. We piled out of the car, bags tumbling, and just stood there gawping. “This is it,” I said to the missus, “our storybook bolthole.” The place brimmed with that effortless charm – welcoming, cosy, perfect for us lot with the kids in tow.

No time wasted unpacking; we cracked open a bottle of fizz on the deck and watched a heron strut its stuff below. The anticipation had been building all week – emails about cathedral visits and cosy pub suppers – but this view? It was better than any brochure promised. That first evening, we ambled along the riverside path, the kids skipping ahead, dodging ducks and breathing in that crisp Kent air. It felt like stepping into a gentler pace of life, far from the M25 madness.

Next morning, after a fry-up that could’ve fed the five thousand (self-catered, naturally), we hopped in the car for Canterbury centre. Two miles feels like nothing, and suddenly we’re wandering those atmospheric medieval lanes, the cathedral looming like a giant from a history book. We mooched through independent shops, grabbed pasties from a baker that smelled like heaven, and ducked into a tearoom for elevenses. The history’s everywhere – crooked timbered buildings, tales of Thomas Becket – but it’s the little things that hooked us, like the street musicians busking near the old city walls.

One quiet moment hit me mid-walk, staring at the river from the deck that night. Amid the laughter and splashing about with the little ones, I realised how rare it is to just... be. No deadlines, no screens pinging – just us, the water’s murmur, and a sky turning pink. We even managed a family board game that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations. Light-hearted bliss.

A gentle cycle along those nearby paths rounded things off – helmets on, wind in our hair, spotting sheep in the fields. Canterbury’s culture and dining scene is spot on too; we hit a cracking Italian for pasta that had us all scraping plates clean. This riverside gem? It’s not just a base; it’s the heart of the holiday. If you’re after charm, peace, and a dash of history without the hassle, get yourself here. We’re already plotting a return.
