About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Kent last autumn – leaves turning that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the lanes like nature’s own welcome mat. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all week, dreaming of crisp mornings and cosy evenings by a fire, but of course, I managed to cock it up right from the start. About halfway there, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent me down a muddy farm track that looked more like a tractor parking lot than a road. I was sliding about like Bambi on ice, heart in my mouth, convinced I’d end up stuck till Christmas. Mercifully, a quick reverse and a bit of swearing under my breath (mostly at the phone) got me back on track, arriving just as the sun dipped low, painting the sky in those fiery oranges you only get in October.

Pulling up to this delightful apartment tucked away in Kent’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, my first impressions were spot on – peaceful didn’t even cover it. Perched in a spot that felt worlds away from the daily grind, with rolling fields glowing under that autumn light, it was like stepping into a postcard. The kind of place where you breathe deep and instantly feel the tension melt away. I’d booked it for a long weekend, craving that seasonal shift from summer’s bustle to autumn’s gentle hush, and it delivered in spades.

First morning, I laced up my boots for one of those criss-crossing footpaths right on the doorstep. The air was that perfect chilly bite, with mist clinging to the hedgerows and the ground crunchy underfoot from fallen leaves. Keen walker that I fancy myself to be (though let’s be honest, I’m more of a fair-weather plodder), it was pure bliss. The Kent countryside in autumn is something else – hawthorn berries like ruby jewels, fungi popping up everywhere, and that earthy scent that makes you feel alive. I wandered for hours, spotting deer in the distance, before heading into nearby Benenden for supplies. The village butchers had the most succulent looking pork pies and fresh veg, all locally sourced, and I grabbed a few bits for a simple supper. Popped into the pub too – a roaring fire, proper ale, and a ploughman’s that hit the spot after all that fresh air.

The season really shaped everything. Days were short but golden, perfect for lazy afternoons reading with a cuppa, watching leaves swirl past the window. One evening, I drove the short hop to Hole Park’s gardens, just 2.5 miles away – the colours were insane, trees ablaze in reds and yellows, with that mellow autumn light making it all feel magical. Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, only 4.5 miles off, was next; the white garden stood out ethereal against the fading foliage, and I had it almost to myself midweek. No crowds, just the rustle of leaves and a few late bees. It got me reflecting a bit, you know? Sat there on a bench, mug of tea from the café in hand, thinking how rushing through life like I do, I forget these quiet moments. Autumn forces you to slow down, doesn’t it? Cosy up, appreciate the decay as much as the bloom.

Evenings back at the apartment were heaven – wood burner flickering (if you’re lucky with the kindling), stew simmering, maybe a cheeky glass of English wine from one of the nearby vineyards. It’s funny how the time of year turns a simple stay into something restorative. No need for far-flung adventures; this pocket of Kent in autumn was adventure enough. If you’re after a proper escape, go now – before winter nips at its heels. I’m already plotting a return.
