About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Hythe – sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Folkestone, sending us on a detour through some narrow lanes that felt like they hadn’t seen daylight since the war. We ended up in a muddy farm track, laughing our heads off as I reversed into a hedge (minor damage, honest). But oh, the anticipation built as we finally spotted the sea, and pulling up to this cosy one-bed apartment right on the beach in Hythe, one of those proper Cinque Ports towns, it was love at first sight. Traditional seaside vibes everywhere – whitewashed front, sea views from the windows, and that fresh salty air hitting you like a welcome hug.

We’d come for a couples’ getaway, proper old-school seaside without the crowds, and it delivered. First morning, instead of heading straight to the high street cafes, we wandered off-piste along the coastline path, aiming for the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway we’d heard was a mile away. Got gloriously lost in the dunes instead – stumbled on this hidden pebbly cove where locals were crabbing with bits of bacon on string. No tourists in sight, just us, the waves, and a cheeky gull nicking my sandwich. Pure magic. We laughed about how getting lost is the best bit of any holiday; it’s when you find the real gems.

That set the tone. Afternoon, we hired bikes from a tiny shed by the pier (ten quid, bargain) and pedalled towards Brockhill Country Park, only two miles off but felt like another world. Missed the main entrance, thank goodness, and veered into these winding trails through ancient woodlands – wild garlic everywhere, bluebells nodding in the breeze. Found a forgotten picnic spot by a pond, with deer watching us like we were the intruders. Sat there with thermos of tea, reflecting on how life back home rushes by, but out here, time stretches. I’m usually such a planner, spreadsheet holidays to death, but letting go and getting muddled? Best decision ever.

Next day, another accidental detour: thought we’d hit the shops, but a wrong turn took us along the clifftop paths towards the Kent Downs. Ended up at this secluded viewpoint overlooking marshy fields, where skylarks were going mental overhead. Spotted a herd of horses grazing wild – perfect for a nosy photo. Back in Hythe, we rewarded ourselves with fish and chips from an indie spot tucked down an alley, grease-proof paper and all. No chains, just proper flaky cod and stories from the owner about wartime smuggling tales.

Evenings were bliss – sunset from the apartment balcony, wine in hand, plotting the next ‘lost’ adventure. Hythe’s got this knack for hidden corners if you stray off the beaten track: secret beaches, woodland whispers, coastal surprises. Left feeling recharged, a bit wiser about embracing the wander. If you’re after that authentic Kent seaside soul, ditch the map and let Hythe work its offbeat charm. We’re already plotting a return.
