About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Broadstairs – we’d packed the car to bursting with beach toys, cool bags and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky diversion through some winding lanes near Margate. The kids were chanting “are we there yet?” while I fumbled with a half-eaten packet of crisps, and just as tempers were fraying, we spotted the sea glinting ahead. Heart lifted, we trundled into the centre of this buzzing little town, and there it was: our airy modern apartment, right in the thick of it all, with cafes and shops spilling onto the pavement and our own parking spot waiting like a VIP pass.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. Stepping inside felt like a proper treat – light and breezy, with everything we needed for a fuss-free family flop. We dumped the bags and dashed straight out to Viking Bay, just a few minutes’ stroll away. That sandy stretch is pure magic, especially on a sunny afternoon. The littlest one built the wonkiest sandcastle imaginable while the older two splashed about, shrieking as waves tickled their toes. I plonked down with a cuppa from one of the beach huts, watching them, and thought, “This is it, isn’t it? The simple stuff that sticks.”

Broadstairs has this effortless charm that’s perfect for a relaxed break. Mornings kicked off with lazy brekkies at a nearby cafe – pancakes for the kids, avocado toast for me, pretending I’m all healthy. Then we’d wander the high street, popping into quirky shops for fudge or postcards, before hitting Joss Bay for a go at bodyboarding. The waves there are gentle enough for beginners, though I wiped out spectacularly once, emerging like a soggy seal to much family laughter. “Dad’s a pro at sinking!” they giggled. Evenings were for fish and chips on the balcony, with seagulls eyeing us up hopefully.

We squeezed in a wander to Ramsgate’s wartime tunnels one drizzly afternoon – eerie and fascinating, a world away from sandcastles, but close enough for an easy jaunt. The kids loved the history bit more than I expected, wide-eyed at the stories. And Broadstairs being Dickens central, we couldn’t resist Bleak House overlooking the bay – peering at the views that inspired the great man himself. No grand tours, just enough to spark their imaginations without overwhelming the holiday vibe.

Of course, there was the usual cottage life chaos: sandy towels everywhere, a forgotten welly under the sofa, and one epic meltdown over who got the top bunk. But that’s the joy of it, right? Amid the mess, I had a quiet moment one evening, sunset painting the sea gold, realising how these unpolished days recharge us. No agendas, just family giggles and salty air. We left with full hearts (and a tad sunburnt noses), already plotting our return. If you’re after that easy Kent coast bliss, this spot’s a gem.
