About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Sandhurst in Kent – what was meant to be a smooth jaunt from London turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just as we were spotting the first signs for the High Weald, my other half spilt her entire flask of tea across the dashboard. Cue frantic wiping with service station napkins while I’m dodging hedgehogs in the road. By the time we pulled up, we were laughing like loons, caffeine-scented and a good half-hour late, but buzzing with that holiday anticipation you can’t beat.

Stepping into the apartment, though, all that chaos melted away. It’s this delightful spot with the most picturesque views over the rolling fields – you know, the kind that make you go “blimey, we’re actually here”. Perfect for us two plus the little ones, cosy without feeling cramped, and done up in that welcoming style that screams “kick off your shoes and stay a while”. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, cracked open a window to let in the fresh Kent air, and just stood there gawping at the landscape stretching out. It felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard, right in the heart of the High Weald National Landscape.

That first afternoon, we couldn’t resist a gentle wander along one of the peaceful trails snaking off from the door – walkers’ paradise, this. Barely a soul about, just birdsong and the odd cow eyeing us suspiciously. It led us towards Bodiam Castle, that stunning 14th-century National Trust gem about 3.5 miles away. We didn’t quite make it that day (legs still jelly from the drive), but the promise of moats and battlements had us plotting a proper hike the next morning. Light humour in the air as the kids pretended to be knights, me tripping over a stile like the unfit dad I am.

Garden lovers like my wife were in heaven too – Great Dixter and Hole Park are just four miles off, with their lush borders and cracking tea rooms. We nipped to Great Dixter the following day, sipping Earl Grey amid the blooms, feeling ever so posh. Hawkhurst village, same distance, charmed us with its high street nooks – grabbed pasties from the bakery and wandered like locals. Even a cycle path nearby tempted us out, though I’ll admit, my first pedal wobble had everyone in stitches.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker. It reminded me holidays aren’t about flawless plans; they’re about those shared giggles and sinking into a place that feels like home. This Sandhurst retreat nailed it – our base for lazy mornings with views, afternoon ambles, and that gentle Kentish magic. Can’t wait to go back.
