About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Sandwich – we’d packed the car to the brim with kids’ snacks, beach towels, and enough board games to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. “Are we lost, Dad?” piped up little Ellie from the back, mid-crisps. Turns out, a cheeky farm tractor had decided to hog the road, turning our two-hour journey into a three-hour comedy of errors. But honestly, by the time we trundled into the historic heart of Sandwich, I was buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you imagine lazy mornings and zero alarm clocks.

Pulling up to the Garden Flat, my first impressions were spot on. It’s tucked into an imposing house surrounded by these stunning gardens that make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a secret Eden. A pretty patio area draws you right in, and stepping into this superb apartment felt like a warm hug – thoughtfully designed, immaculately presented, and dead peaceful despite being slap bang in the middle of Sandwich’s charming old streets. Perfect base for a family unwind, we thought, with shops just 500 yards away for emergency ice creams and the pub the same distance for a sneaky pint later.

We wasted no time settling into that relaxed family break vibe. First morning, chaos reigned supreme as the kids – ages 6 and 9 – turned unpacking into a full-on pillow fight tournament. I joined in, naturally, only to trip over a rogue sandal and end up sprawled on the plush rug, laughing till my sides hurt. Cottage life, eh? It’s all about those simple pleasures: brewing a proper cuppa on the sunny patio while the garden birds put on a show, or wandering five minutes to the local bakery for fresh Kentish pasties that taste like summer itself.

Afternoons were for mooching – a gentle stroll to the River Stour for pebble-skipping contests (I lost spectacularly, as usual), or popping to the medieval Barbican for a bit of history without the hordes. The coast’s just two miles off, so one day we drove to Pegwell Bay, building wonky sandcastles and dodging waves, with the kids shrieking in delight. Evenings? Back to the flat for homemade spag bol (my specialty, allegedly), followed by Monopoly marathons that descended into giggles and alliances. That pub down the road served cracking fish and chips – we went twice, pretending it was for the “local culture”.

Pausing for a moment of gentle self-reflection amid the fun, I realised this was exactly what we needed. Life back home’s a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here, amid the garden flat’s calm, we switched off properly. No grand adventures, just family bonding over burnt toast and silly games. Sandwich has loads more to offer – ancient guilds, quirky museums, walks along the quay – we’ll have to come back to tick them off. If you’re after a peaceful Kent escape with a side of cottage chaos, this spot’s a gem. We left with sandy shoes, full bellies, and hearts properly recharged.
