About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Whitstable – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from London turned into a proper comedy of errors. Satnav decided to play silly buggers just as we hit the A299, rerouting us through some winding back lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel while my other half clutched the crisps like a lifeline. Then, to top it off, we had a minor prang with a rogue seagull that swooped in front of the car, leaving a feathery mess on the windscreen. “Welcome to Kent,” I muttered, wiping it off with a soggy tissue. By the time we trundled into town, hearts racing and tempers a tad frayed, I was half-convinced the holiday was cursed before it began.

But oh, pulling up to that gracious ground-floor apartment right on the seafront? Instant magic. The anticipation had been building all week – visions of salty breezes and lazy mornings – and it didn’t disappoint. From the elegant Arts and Crafts entrance, it felt like stepping into a bygone era, all polished wood and soft lighting that whispered “relax now, you daft lot.” We tumbled in, bags everywhere, and there it was: those beautifully upholstered window seats begging us to flop down and gawp at the unrestricted sea views. France on a clear day, or so they say, but honestly, the endless grey-blue waves crashing below were mesmerising enough. A jewel of a place, designed for folk like us who appreciate a bit of character without the fuss.

First impressions? Bloody brilliant – sorry, dashed brilliant. We dumped our stuff and cracked open a bottle of fizz from the offy just 200 yards away (handy that), toasting our survival. The flat’s got this discerning vibe – plush furnishings, thoughtful touches everywhere – like the owners knew exactly how to make you feel pampered. No poky holiday let this; it’s a proper home from home. By evening, we’d wandered out to the pubs a quick five-minute stroll down the front, bellies rumbling for fish and chips from one of those no-nonsense chippies Whitstable does so well. Sat on the pebble beach, toes in the shingle, watching the sun dip – pure bliss after our arrival chaos.

Reflecting on it now, that messy journey was a gift, really. It made the calm of the apartment hit harder, like the universe saying, “See? Worth the faff.” We spent the next days pottering: oyster tasting at the Harbour Market (fresh as can be), café-hopping along the high street with its quirky independents, and endless sea-gazing from those window seats. A week wasn’t nearly long enough – the pubs, the restaurants, the sheer variety had us plotting a return before we’d even packed. If you’re after a seafront gem that ticks every box, this is it. Chaos and all, Whitstable worked its charm on us.
