About Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Hythe – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from London turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us through some narrow country lanes that felt more like goat tracks than roads. Then, just as we were nearing the coast, a rogue seagull dive-bombed the windscreen, leaving a splatter that had me wiping away with a soggy tissue while my other half howled with laughter. By the time we pulled up, both me and the dog were knackered, covered in feathers and fast food wrappers from a hasty service station stop. Anticipation was bubbling though – I’d been dreaming of that salty sea air all week.

Pulling into the ample off-road parking spot felt like a minor victory. There it was: this charming ground-floor apartment, all welcoming and tucked away in Elm Court, right in the heart of Hythe’s coastal vibe. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside, it was like the place had been waiting just for us – cosy, light-filled rooms with everything you need for a seaside unwind. The dog immediately claimed a sunny corner by the window, tail thumping like a drum, while we dumped our bags and cracked open a couple of cold ones from the fridge (bless the hosts for stocking the basics).

No time wasted faffing about. A quick splash under the shower to rinse off the road grime, and we were out the door for that short stroll to the local shops. Popped into the butcher for some fresh crab claws – Hythe’s got that proper seaside freshness – and grabbed crusty bread from the bakery that still smelled like it’d just come out of the oven. Five minutes later, we were at the welcoming pub down the road, the Royal British Legion or one of those no-nonsense locals where the barman knows everyone’s name. Settled in with a pint of Kentish ale, watching the world go by, and honestly, that first sip washed away every bit of the journey’s chaos.

Next morning, the beach was calling – just a short drive away, past those classic Hythe dunes. We wandered along the pebbly shore, dog splashing in the shallows, me skimming stones like a kid again. Picked up fish and chips from a takeaway near the Imperial Harbour, scoffing them on a bench with gulls eyeing us jealously. It was all so effortlessly lovely, the kind of holiday that sneaks up and makes you realise how much you needed it.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker – turned what could’ve been a stressful start into a story we’re still chuckling about. Me, I pondered over a cuppa on the patio how often we rush through life without these little escapes. This spot’s ideal for couples and a well-behaved pooch seeking just that: a proper seaside breather, no frills, all heart. If you’re pondering a Kent getaway, trust me, it doesn’t get much better.
