About Kent
We’d barely made it out of the M20 when the satnav decided to play silly buggers and reroute us through a warren of lanes that looked nothing like the coastal road we’d planned. By the time we reached Walmer I was convinced we’d taken a wrong turn somewhere near a roundabout that didn’t exist, and the car was full of the sort of bickering that only happens when everyone’s hungry and the postcode keeps changing. We finally pulled up outside the five-bed cottage just as the light was starting to fade, the sea air already smelling sharper than the petrol-station coffee we’d downed an hour earlier.

The place looked exactly like the pictures—white weatherboard, a little shingle garden, a view straight onto the shingle beach—but what struck me first was how quiet it felt after the motorway. We dragged the bags inside, flicked on lights that smelled faintly of woodsmoke, and promptly realised none of us had thought to pick up milk. That small oversight turned into our first proper wander. Instead of heading straight back to the main road we followed a footpath that ran behind the garden hedge, and within ten minutes we’d stumbled on a tiny honesty-box stall selling fresh eggs and jars of local honey. We left the right money in the tin and carried on, curious now, the way you only are when you’re not quite sure where you’re going.

The path narrowed between high hedges and then opened onto a strip of grass that ran parallel to the beach. We could hear the sea but couldn’t quite see it yet; every so often a gap in the shingle let the wind through and the sound grew louder. A handwritten sign pointing to “The Dell” caught our eye, so we followed it down a slope we hadn’t noticed on any map. It led to a sheltered hollow where someone had left a couple of driftwood benches and a fire pit already ringed with stones. No one else was there, just the low hush of waves and the occasional gull. We sat for a while, watching the last of the colour drain from the sky, and it felt like we’d found the sort of spot that locals probably keep to themselves.

By the time we wandered back the cottage felt different—less like somewhere we were visiting and more like a base we’d already started to claim. The kitchen light was still on from when we’d first arrived, and the windows glowed softly against the darkening beach. We made tea with the eggs we’d bought and ate them standing up, too tired to bother with plates. Outside, the tide was coming in; we could just hear it over the hum of the kettle. I found myself thinking how easy it is to plan a holiday down to the last detail and still end up somewhere better because you took a wrong turn and kept walking.
