Our holiday in Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to that little holiday cottage near Dartford – what should’ve been a straightforward two hours from London turned into a comedy of errors when we hit a massive tailback on the M25. Rain lashing the windscreen, queues stretching for miles, and me cursing the sat nav for not warning us sooner. By the time we pulled up, we were knackered but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, wondering what awaited us.

First impressions? Spot on. It’s one of those cosy semi-detached cottages, all homely and tucked away in a quiet spot, with a garden that screamed “put your feet up”. We dumped the bags, brewed a cuppa, and eyed the clouds rolling in – classic Kent weather, ready to play its tricks.

Next morning, blue skies! We laced up our boots for a cracking walk along the nearby River Darent. It’s just a short stroll from the cottage, past lush meadows and those quintessential hopping fields you still spot around here. The sun was out, birds chirping, and we felt like proper explorers, nattering away about nothing much. Pushed on to the edge of the Darent Valley, where the paths widen into proper country lanes – about three miles round trip, perfect for stretching the legs without overdoing it. Grabbed fish and chips from a chippy in the village on the way back; nothing beats that post-walk grease.

But oh, the British weather – it loves a plot twist. Day two, we planned a longer hike towards the Commons, those open green spaces dotted with ancient trees, maybe four miles out along well-trodden trails. Halfway in, the heavens opened. Proper deluge, turning paths to mud baths. We squelched on for a bit, laughing like idiots as water poured into our boots, but common sense kicked in. Sheltered under a massive oak, shared a soggy sandwich, and admitted defeat. Trudged back looking like drowned rats, vowing to check the forecast next time.

Undeterred, we adapted. Third day, more drizzle, so we stuck local – gentle loops around the cottage neighbourhood, weaving through quiet lanes and past horse paddocks. It was one of those reflective moments, you know? Splashing through puddles, hoods up, I thought about how we’re always chasing perfect sun-soaked holidays, but these soggy adventures build the best stories. Ended up back at the cottage, boots drying by the radiator, mugs of tea in hand, plotting tomorrow’s route.

By the end of the week, we’d clocked miles of Kentish paths in every mood the sky could muster – blazing sun one minute, mizzle the next. Those walks recharged us properly, mishaps and all. If you’re after a base for leg-stretching escapes with weather as your wildcard co-star, this corner of Kent delivers. Can’t wait to go back.
