Our holiday in Kent
I finally made it to Kent after what felt like the world's most faffing journey from London. My partner and I piled into the car with high hopes for a cosy couple's getaway, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a massive tailback on the M20 thanks to some roadworks. We were bickering over whether to detour through the back lanes or just sit it out, and I ended up spilling my coffee all over the passenger seat mat—classic me, turning a simple drive into a comedy of errors. But as we trundled into Maidstone, the anticipation built; I could practically smell the fresh air already.

Pulling up to the cottage, we were gobsmacked by the first impressions. It's this quaint little detached place tucked away in a peaceful spot, all welcoming with its homely style and that perfect garden setup for lazy afternoons. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz on the patio, toasting to no more traffic jams.

The next few days were pure bliss, the sort of relaxed family-couple break where you forget the world exists. Mornings kicked off with brekkie in the cottage kitchen—proper bacon sarnies and pots of tea, with me burning the toast because I got distracted faffing with the radio. We'd wander hand-in-hand to the nearby canal paths for gentle strolls, spotting herons and narrowboats chugging along like something out of a postcard. Maidstone's got that unpretentious charm; we nipped into town for a mooch around the market, picking up local cheeses and a punnet of strawberries that tasted like summer.

Afternoons were for simple pleasures—the garden became our kingdom. I attempted a spot of barbecuing, which mostly involved me waving tongs about while she laughed at the smoke signals I was sending up. Chaos ensued when a cheeky robin dive-bombed our picnic, scattering crisps everywhere, but it was the kind of cottage life mishap that had us in stitches. Evenings meant curling up on the sofa with a DVD, or just chatting rubbish over wine as the sun dipped behind the trees.

One quiet moment by the garden pond had me reflecting gently—life back home's a whirlwind of deadlines and dash, but here, with the birdsong and her head on my shoulder, I realised how these little escapes recharge the soul. No grand plans, just us pottering about, embracing the joyful disorder of it all.

We hated leaving after four nights, already plotting our return. Kent's hidden gems like this make you wonder why we don't do it more often. If you're after that heartwarming cottage vibe without the hassle, this corner of Maidstone delivers every time.
