About Overchurch.
Hythe, one of the original Cinque Ports, supplied ships and sailors to defend England's coast, gaining prosperity still evident today. The Royal Military Canal, dug against Napoleonic invasion, now offers peaceful walks, picnics, and rowing. A short stroll leads to a wide promenade with shingle beach, Channel views to France, and safe bathing. Enjoy golf, tennis, riding, bowls, squash, boating, windsurfing, and angling. Explore Romney Marsh on foot, by car, bike, or the world's smallest public railway—Hythe's Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Light Railway to Dungeness lighthouse and nature reserve. Nearby attractions.
Our holiday in Kent
Pulling up was a relief, though – easy roadside parking right outside, no faffing about with permits or anything. We’d booked this cracking little holiday home near the beach, the sort of place that screams cosy coastal escape without being flashy. It’s spot-on for families or mates, and welcomes two well-behaved dogs (ours qualified, just about). Stepping inside felt like a warm hug after the chaos – first impressions? Bloody brilliant. The spacious kitchen/diner hit me straight away, all bright and inviting, with everything you could need to whip up a feast. I could picture us all crammed around that dining table later, tucking into fish and chips from the local, laughing off the drive. There’s a utility room tucked away with a washing machine and dishwasher – lifesavers after a day lugging sandy towels. And the sitting room? Pure bliss. A gas fire flickering away (even though it was mild out), comfy sofas, and a telly for the footie. We dumped the bags, let the dog flop on the rug, and just breathed. That first moment of “ahh, we’ve made it” was magic, especially after the travel farce. We didn’t waste time – a quick wander down to Hythe beach, just a stone’s throw away, had us grinning like idiots. The shingle crunched underfoot, sea breeze whipping up, and the Imperial Harbour bobbing with boats. Picked up ice creams from the promenade café, watched families paddling, and even spotted a few seals out on the water (or were they just logs? Kids swore they were seals). Back at the house, we fired up the kitchen for a late lunch – nothing fancy, just sarnies and kettle crisps – but it tasted like heaven. Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was a blessing in disguise. It made the peace of the place hit harder, you know? I’m usually rushing about like a headless chicken at home, but here, with the waves in earshot and everything sorted, I actually slowed down. Laughed at myself for getting so wound up over a bit of traffic. We’ve got a few days left for Saltwood Castle strolls, maybe a mooch along the Royal Military Canal, or just beach bumming. If you’re after a proper Kent coast unwind, this is the spot. Can’t recommend it enough – mishaps and all. |
