  • Deal Castle

Deal Castle is a 16th-century artillery fort, located between Walmer Castle and Sandown Castle. Built by King Henry VIII, it is one of the finest Tudor artillery castles in England. Henry VIII felt the need to protect England from European invasion at this strategic coastal point.

Our holiday in Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Herne Bay last autumn – the leaves were turning that perfect mix of gold and rust, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all week, dreaming of cosy evenings by the fire after long walks along the coast. But typical me, I took a wrong turn just past Canterbury, ending up in some sleepy village lane with hedges closing in like a scene from a dodgy horror film. Fifteen minutes of faffing about with the satnav later, and I was back on track, laughing at myself for nearly turning a relaxing break into a full-on rally challenge.

Pulling up to the beach bungalow that crisp October afternoon, I was smitten straight away. It’s one of those charming, low-slung spots right by the shore, all whitewashed walls and big windows that catch the sea glint – the kind of place that screams “put your feet up and forget the world”. First impressions? Spot on. The sea air hit me like a bracing tonic, carrying that salty tang mixed with the earthy scent of fallen leaves. Autumn in Kent is magic, isn’t it? No summer crowds clogging the pavements, just that mellow light that makes everything feel a bit more poetic.

We wasted no time settling in. That first evening, with the sun dipping low and painting the sky in fiery oranges, I cracked open a bottle of local apple cider – Kent’s orchards were in full harvest mode, and the stuff tasted like liquid autumn. The bungalow’s garden backed straight onto the shingle beach, so we wrapped up in scarves and wandered down for sunset watching. Waves lapping gently, gulls wheeling overhead, and not a soul in sight. It was pure bliss, the kind that makes you realise how knackered you’ve been from the daily grind.

Next day, the season really shone through. Misty mornings perfect for a brisk stroll along Herne Bay’s promenade – the pier looked ethereal in the fog, arcade lights twinkling faintly like distant stars. We grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway shack, the batter extra crispy against the chill, and ate them huddled on a bench, watching dog walkers battle the wind. Later, a short hop to Reculver Towers – those ancient ruins perched on the cliffs felt even more dramatic with the wind whipping through the marram grass, turning it into a proper time-travel moment. The autumn gales added a thrill, but nothing too wild; just enough to pink your cheeks and sharpen your appetite.

Evenings were the highlight, though. Curled up indoors as the light faded early – proper dark by half five – with the wood burner going full pelt. I’d flick through a dog-eared book while rain pattered on the windows, reflecting on how this time of year strips things back to basics. No faffing with BBQs or suncream; just simple joys like a hot toddy and the sound of the sea. It made me pause and think – life’s too short not to chase these quiet escapes. We left feeling utterly recharged, already plotting a return for next autumn’s fireworks over the bay. If you’re after that perfect seasonal hug by the Kent coast, this is it.
