Our holiday in Kent
I set off from London bright and early, buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation—you know, the kind where you're already mentally unpacking your bag before you've even left the M25. But typical me, I took a wrong turn near Ashford and ended up in some cheeky little detour through winding lanes, faffing about with the satnav for a good half hour. Still, it gave me time to daydream about all the grub I was going to demolish over the next few days. Finally, I rolled up to this gorgeous little converted barn, all cosy and tucked away in the Kent countryside, with that welcoming vibe that screams "put your feet up and forget the world."

First impressions? Spot on. The place was pristine, with a cracking kitchen that had me itching to get stuck into some cooking straight away. No faffing with dusty corners or dodgy Wi-Fi; it felt like home from the off. I dumped my bags and headed out for a nose around the nearby spots—turns out, you're spoilt for choice with proper local eats within a stone's throw.

Day one, I wandered over to the Ashford Farmers' Market, just a quick drive away. Blimey, what a feast for the eyes! Stalls groaning under fresh Kent strawberries, artisan cheeses that could make you weep, and the biggest, juiciest tomatoes you've ever seen. I loaded up on local sausages, a wedge of crumbly cheddar, and some crusty bread from the baker who swore it was made with a family recipe older than my nan. Back at the barn, I had a right go at a full English—bacon sizzling, eggs poached just so, and those sausages? Absolute belters. Managed to burn the toast a tad, mind you, which had me chuckling at my own incompetence. Who needs a Michelin star when you've got enthusiasm?

Evenings were pub central. The local boozer down the lane, a proper old-school job with low ceilings and a roaring fire, did the best fish and chips I've had in ages—crisp batter, fluffy insides, and mushy peas that hit the spot. I washed it down with a pint of Kent ale, chatting with the barman about the best spots for a Sunday roast. Next day, I tried that: proper Yorkshire puds the size of hubcaps, crackling that crunched like it should, and gravy you could swim in. Sat there in the corner, feeling a bit reflective, you know? Life's too short for rubbish food, innit? This holiday was reminding me to savour the simple stuff.

Couldn't resist a cheeky cream tea one afternoon from a nearby café—scones still warm, clotted cream thicker than my accent, and strawberry jam straight from those market gems. Even attempted a posh pasta dinner one night, tossing in fresh herbs and cherry tomatoes from the garden plot nearby. It wasn't half bad, though the sauce was a bit lumpy—self-taught chef problems.

All in, it was a weekend of pure indulgence, every meal a highlight. If you're after a Kent getaway where the food leads the way, this corner's a gem. Left feeling stuffed, happy, and already plotting the next trip.
