Our holiday in Kent
I’ll never forget the drive down to Kent – me at the wheel, my wife navigating with that app on her phone that promised the scenic route through the Kent Downs. We’d been buzzing with anticipation, dreaming of ditching the daily grind for a proper couples’ getaway, just the two of us in some rural hideaway near Chilham. But typical us, we hit a snag about 20 minutes in: a cheeky cow decided to block the lane, staring us down like it owned the place. Cue 10 minutes of gentle honking and me muttering about farmer’s revenge, while we laughed it off with a shared thermos of tea. Proper countryside chaos, but it only ramped up the excitement.

Finally rolling up to the spot just 1.4 miles from Chilham, we parked on the gravel and wandered across the rear lawn, suitcases in tow. First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. This contemporary studio-style bolthole sat right on the edge of the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, all tucked away in Mystole’s peaceful fields. Private garden stretching out, complete with a wood-fired hot tub that screamed relaxation – we were grinning like kids already.

Stepping inside, it was straight into this stylish open-plan haven, perfect for two. The kitchen was fully kitted out, sleek breakfast bar begging for morning coffee rituals, and plush seating with a Smart TV for cosy evenings. No faffing about with check-ins; it felt like our own little world from the off. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local Kentish sparkling wine we’d picked up en route – cheers to that!

The next couple of days blurred into pure, unhurried bliss. Mornings started with brekkie at the bar – me fumbling with the fancy coffee machine while she nattered about village life. We’d amble out for gentle walks along the Downs, those rolling hills dotted with sheep and wildflowers, breathing in air that tasted like freedom. One afternoon, we pottered into Chilham village, just a short drive away – it’s this postcard-pretty spot with a duck pond, a cracking pub called the White Horse where we scoffed ploughman’s lunches, and honey-stone cottages that make you wish you lived there. Nothing fancy, just simple pleasures: feeding the ducks, lingering over pints, and dodging the odd summer shower with ice creams from the tearoom.

Evenings were for firing up the hot tub – wood smoke curling up as we bubbled away, stars popping out overhead. There was a hilarious moment when I overdid the logs and it turned into a mini sauna; we emerged pink and giggling, wrapped in towels, pondering how we’d turned into proper hot tub hippies. Cottage life’s got that chaotic charm, hasn’t it? A bit of fiddling with the fire, spilling tea on the sofa, but it’s all part of the magic.

Reflecting on it now, sat back home with the washing piling up, that break was a gentle nudge: we don’t need grand adventures, just each other, a snug spot, and the quiet hum of Kent’s countryside. It recharged us no end, reminding me to savour these little escapes before life gets too hectic again. If you’re after a relaxed couples’ retreat, this is the ticket – pure Kentish joy.
