Our holiday in New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to the New Forest – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked it off. My wife and I had been buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, you know, the kind where you’ve got the playlist sorted and a flask of tea at the ready. But about halfway there, just past Salisbury, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down some dodgy B-road that turned into a muddy track. “This can’t be right,” I muttered, as the car started fishtailing through puddles. We emerged, laughing like idiots, covered in splatter, but it broke the ice perfectly. By the time we rolled up to our little one-bed cottage on the western edge of the New Forest National Park, near Ringwood, we were starving and soaked – but utterly charmed.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Tucked away in Blashford, this cosy spot screamed peaceful getaway for us two. The garden backed right onto those ancient woodlands, and you could practically hear the ponies whinnying in the distance. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of fizz we’d stashed in the cool bag, and just sat there grinning at the view. No kids, no deadlines – just us, a couple in our forties finally switching off from the daily grind.

The next morning, we wandered into Ringwood, only a couple of miles away. What a gem that market town is – proper British high street vibes with indie shops flogging everything from posh cheeses to handmade cards, plus those traditional pubs spilling out onto the pavements. We grabbed a flat white in a café that smelled like fresh scones and spent ages people-watching. “This is the life,” she said, and I couldn’t argue. Back at the cottage, chaos ensued in the best way: I tried rustling up a Full English on the tiny stove, but managed to set off the smoke alarm with overdone bacon. Cue much faffing about with tea towels and helpless giggles. Cottage life, eh? Simple pleasures like that make it all.

Of course, we couldn’t resist the New Forest proper. It’s right on the doorstep – vast woodlands and heathlands just begging to be explored. We ambled along one of those gentle trails near Ellingham, spotting a herd of those cheeky New Forest ponies grazing as if they owned the place (which, let’s face it, they do). Deer darted through the bracken, and we even clocked a few buzzards overhead. No hardcore hikes for us; it was all about pottering, hand-in-hand, breathing in that crisp, piney air. Later, we hired bikes from a spot in the village and cycled lazy loops, stopping for picnic sandwiches that tasted ten times better outdoors.

One evening, we nipped over to Ringwood Brewery, just three miles down the road. Sampling their crisp ales while hearing how they brew the stuff was a right treat – proper local pride in every pint. We staggered back tipsy and content, collapsing by the wood burner with a board game that descended into friendly cheating accusations.

Looking back, that week was a gentle nudge to slow down. We’re so caught up in life’s rush, aren’t we? But there, amid the cottage clutter and forest whispers, we rediscovered the joy in faffing about together. If you’re after a relaxed couples’ break, this neck of the woods delivers – ponies, pints, and all. Can’t wait to go back.
