Our holiday in New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to Godshill in the New Forest – what was meant to be a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a comedy of errors. Sat-nav insisted on taking us through some impossibly narrow lanes, the kind where brambles claw at your wing mirrors, and just as we thought we’d made it, we had a classic moment: pulling up to the property only to realise I’d left the keys dangling from the car door handle back at the last layby. Cue me sprinting back half a mile while my other half chuckled from the passenger seat, phone in hand timing me like it was the village Olympics. By the time I returned, sweaty and triumphant, we were both in stitches, the anticipation of our cosy couple’s getaway bubbling over into proper giggles.

But oh, what a payoff when we finally tumbled through the door of this charming little retreat in the heart of prehistoric Godshill. It’s the sort of place that whispers “relax” the moment you step inside – think welcoming, traditional style with all the comforts you need after a mishap-filled journey. First impressions? Absolutely smashing. The views from the windows straight out to the New Forest National Park were like something off a postcard, with those ancient trees stretching out invitingly. We dumped our bags and within minutes were lacing up our boots, buzzing with that “we’ve arrived!” thrill. Footpaths right there within 200 metres? Perfect – no faffing about with parking or maps; we just wandered off into the woods, hand in hand, dodging ponies that eyed us curiously as if to say, “Newbies, eh?”

That first afternoon was pure magic. We ambled along sun-dappled trails, the air thick with the scent of pine and wild garlic, spotting deer darting through the undergrowth. It’s funny how a bit of arrival chaos can heighten everything – without that daft key fiasco, maybe we wouldn’t have appreciated the peace quite so much. We paused for a gentle mooch around the village itself, which feels like stepping back in time, all quiet lanes and thatched roofs. The local pub, just a 600-metre stroll away, called to us like a siren by late afternoon. Popped in for a pint of proper Hampshire ale and a ploughman’s – nothing fancy, but hearty and spot-on after our adventures. Chatted with the barman about the best spots for a sunset walk, feeling instantly at home.

Reflecting on it now, over a cuppa back in the cottage that evening, I realised how these little holidays reset you. I’d been knackered from work, a bit frayed around the edges, but Godshill worked its charm. No grand plans, just us, the forest, and the odd pony photobomb. Next morning, we nipped over to Fordingbridge, only two miles down the road – charming little town with its independent shops and cafes. Grabbed fresh pasties from a baker’s and scoffed them on a bench by the river, watching the world go by. It’s that easy rhythm that makes the New Forest special: wild ponies, whispering woods, and a retreat that feels uniquely yours.

If you’re after a couples’ escape that blends adventure with utter bliss, this Godshill gem is it. We left with full hearts, empty crisp packets, and a promise to return – mishaps and all.
