Our holiday in New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to the New Forest last month – we’d packed the car with wellies, maps, and enough crisps to see us through a siege, but about ten miles from Ringwood, the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent us looping round some muddy back lane. Typical me, I thought I knew better and ignored it, only to end up nose-to-nose with a herd of those cheeky New Forest ponies eyeing us like we were the intruders. A quick reverse and a sheepish laugh later, we were back on track, hearts racing but grinning like idiots.

Pulling up to this charming little two-bed cottage on the western edge of the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, I felt that proper holiday buzz – you know, the one where you wind down the window, breathe in the piney air, and think, “This is going to be mint.” Tucked away in Blashford near Ringwood, it’s the sort of peaceful spot perfect for families or mates wanting to unplug. Ringwood itself is just a short hop, with its indie shops, cracking pubs, and cosy cafes – ideal for a lazy mooch when the weather plays ball.

First morning, the sun was out, bold as brass, so we laced up and hit the trails right from the doorstep. The New Forest’s woodlands and heathlands are pure magic for walkers – we followed a cracking path through ancient trees, dodging pony poo and spotting deer darting between the bracken. That first hike, about four miles looping back via some open heath, felt like stepping into a Tolkien book. The ponies everywhere, grazing nonchalantly, and birds flitting about – I could’ve walked all day. We even bumped into a family of fallow deer, which had my other half snapping away like a proper David Attenborough.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? By day two, the sky turned that moody grey, and the heavens opened just as we set off for a longer trek towards the heathlands near Ellingham. Sod’s law. We’d planned a solid six-miler with panoramic views, but it hammered down, turning paths into streams. Laughing through chattering teeth, we squelched on for a bit – the forest smells incredible in the rain, all earthy and alive – but eventually admitted defeat and hunkered down under some trees for a soggy picnic. Me, ever the optimist, had packed flask after flask of tea; nothing sorts a damp hike like a proper brew.

The next day brought a sneaky mix: sunny spells for a gentle riverside stroll along the Avon, watching kingfishers dart over the water, then sudden squalls that had us improvising with jackets as ponchos. It forced us to adapt – shorter loops closer to the cottage, discovering hidden glades we’d have missed otherwise. One evening, as the rain eased, we wandered into Ringwood for a pint at a trad pub, toasting our mud-caked boots.

Looking back, those weather-whipped walks were the highlight. They reminded me how I’m always chasing perfect plans, but it’s the soggy detours that stick. If you’re after proper New Forest vibes – ponies, trails, and that unpredictable thrill – grab a cottage like this and just go. You’ll come home knackered, grinning, and plotting the next rainy ramble.
