Our holiday in New Forest
We'd been dreaming of a proper getaway to the New Forest for ages, just me, my wife Sarah, and our two lads, Finn and Theo, aged eight and five. The drive down from London started promisingly—sunny M3, classic FM on the radio, kids glued to their tablets—but then came the classic family holiday mishap. Somewhere past Southampton, Theo decided it was the perfect moment to hurl his apple core out the window, only for it to boomerang back onto the windscreen. Cue emergency stop, a frantic wipe-down with baby wipes, and me muttering about "nature's revenge" while Sarah stifled giggles. Twenty minutes later, we were back on track, hearts racing a bit, but buzzing with that arrival anticipation. What would this little spot in Milford on Sea be like?

Pulling up to the cottage just as the late afternoon sun dipped towards the Solent, my first impressions were spot on—it brimmed with character and comfort, the sort of family-friendly haven that wraps you up like a cosy jumper. Tucked in this charming traditional village, it felt like stepping into someone else's lovely life, with sea views peeking through to Christchurch Harbour and the Isle of Wight hazy on the horizon. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and the boys were off like shots, whooping at the garden space. Inside, it was all welcoming nooks, local artist paintings on the walls, and shelves groaning with nature books that had us itching to explore. Sarah sighed happily: "This is it, our reset button."

First morning, we ambled down to Hordle Cliff Beach, just a mile and a half away—shingle underfoot, those colourful beach huts glowing in the light, and views across the Solent that make you forget the world. The lads spent hours skimming stones (Theo's aim much improved post-apple incident), while we lounged with thermos tea, toes in the water. Pure simple pleasure, that. Lunch was chaotic cottage life at its best—sandwiches demolished on the kitchen table amid sticky fingers and debates over who ate the last crisp. Afternoon took us to Hurst Castle along Hurst Spit, a mile's stroll or cycle (we opted for the latter, helmets askew). Those Tudor towers against the endless sky had the history buff in me grinning, and the open spaces let the boys burn off energy chasing gulls, no iPads in sight.

Evenings were for unwinding: sunset cliff-top walks from the village, past cream teas at the local spot, then back for board games and Sarah's famous pasta. One night, watching the lads conk out mid-Monopoly, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection—amid the joyful chaos of spilled milk and lost socks, this is what recharges us as a family. No grand plans, just these unhurried days soaking up the New Forest's gentle magic.

A quick hop to Keyhaven, a mile up, gifted us birdwatching bliss at the marshes—egrets and avocets flitting about, binoculars borrowed from the cottage shelf. We spotted seals bobbing offshore, the boys whispering like pros. It was all so effortlessly relaxed, this couple-with-kids break vibe, far from the daily grind. Leaving after four nights, we were already plotting a return—Milford on Sea had well and truly hooked us.
