Our holiday in New Forest
Pulling up, I was chuffed to bits – first impressions were spot on. It’s got that cosy, lived-in charm you crave on holiday, and being smack in Sway meant I could wander to the village centre for a pint or pasty without breaking a sweat. Enviable access to the coast and park? Understatement of the year. I dumped my bags and laced up my boots pronto, itching to hit the paths. First day, the weather gods were smiling – bright blue skies, not a cloud in sight. I headed out on one of those cracking walking routes from the village, straight into the National Park. Ponies everywhere, grazing like they own the place (which they sort of do), and the forest floor all crunchy underfoot with bracken and heather. I did a good five-miler looping towards the coast, popping into a country pub midway for a ploughman’s and a cheeky half. Proper idyllic, that – the kind of walk where you forget the world’s woes and just breathe it all in. But oh, British weather, you fickle friend. Next morning, I woke to lashings of rain hammering the windows. No chance of that sunny coastal ramble I’d planned. Instead, I grabbed my waterproofs and embraced the soggy adventure. The paths turn into proper squelchy mudbaths after a downpour, don’t they? Slid about like Bambi on ice a few times, laughing at myself as I nearly ended up arse-over-tit in a puddle. Stuck to shorter loops closer to Sway, weaving through the trees where the canopy at least offered a bit of shelter. Spotted a herd of deer scarpering through the mist – magical, even if my socks were soaked through. By afternoon, it cleared up just enough for another go. This time, a network trail taking in some open heathland, the views stretching out towards Lymington’s hazy outline. Ended up at a cracking pub for fish and chips, reflecting on how these weather-whips have a way of making you appreciate the good bits more. I mean, who needs perfect forecasts when you’ve got that fresh post-rain earthy smell and the thrill of dodging puddles? It’s character-building, innit? A couple more days of this – drizzle forcing impromptu village wanders, then sun coaxing out longer hikes. One epic one skirted the forest edge, with ponies photobombed in every snap. Left me knackered but grinning, pondering how a bit of unpredictable weather turned a standard holiday into something properly memorable. If you’re after walks that adapt to whatever the skies chuck at you, Sway’s your spot. Can’t recommend it enough. |
