Our holiday in New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to the New Forest – or rather, the comedy of errors that got me there. Sat nav insisted on a scenic route through twisty lanes, but I took a wrong turn somewhere near Salisbury and ended up in a muddy farm track, tyres spinning like I was auditioning for a rally. Twenty minutes of reversing and sheep-dodging later, I emerged, chuckling at my own daftness, heart racing with that proper holiday buzz. As I finally pulled up to this gorgeous manor house tucked away on Blashford Manor Farm, just a mile from Ringwood’s olde-worlde charm, I was gobsmacked. Picture-perfect in that rambling countryside way, right beside the New Forest National Park – my first impressions? Pure magic, like stepping into a postcard.

We’d booked it for a family get-together, craving that rural retreat vibe, and it delivered from the off. But the real joy? Stumbling on hidden gems by pure accident. First morning, I fancied a wander into the park – it’s only half a mile away – and instead of the obvious trails, I veered off down a shady bridleway marked by a wonky signpost. Lost? Maybe a tad. But it led to this secret heathland clearing where wild ponies grazed right up to my boots, mist rolling off ancient gorse like something out of a Tolkien tale. No crowds, just me, the birds, and a thermos of tea. I sat there ages, reflecting on how I never slow down back home – proper mindfulness without the yoga mat.

Later, cycling out (bikes were a godsend from the house), we got properly turned around in the woodlands. Aiming for Ibsley’s bog, we ended up at a tucked-away pond I’d never heard of, alive with dragonflies and the odd kingfisher dart. Lunch was a picnic of local Ringwood pasties from the weekly market – grabbed some the day before amid Georgian facades and chatter about the best cider. That market’s a gem itself; we found it by chance, looping back through the town after another wrong turn. Haggled for fresh scones and clotted cream, laughing as the stallholder ribbed my navigation skills.

Afternoons blurred into lazy explorations: pushing through Ellingham’s forgotten lanes to a wee ancient oak grove, perfect for kids to build dens while we dozed. One evening, dusk stroll turned into discovering a hidden dew pond, ponies silhouetted against the sunset – accidental poetry. Getting lost became our theme; every detour unearthed something brilliant, from fairy-door-sized badger sets to a babbling brook ideal for paddling.

Looking back, that mishap on arrival set the tone – life’s detours are where the good stuff hides. This manor house stay wasn’t just a holiday; it was a reminder to embrace the wander. If you’re after off-the-beaten-path New Forest bliss, pack your sense of adventure and go get lost. You won’t regret it.
