About New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to Lymington in the New Forest – sat nav insisting we were nearly there, only for us to take a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had us convinced we’d ended up in a episode of Midsomer Murders. A cheeky little mishap involving a flock of sheep blocking the road and me reversing into a hedge (don’t ask), but honestly, it just built the anticipation. By the time we rolled into town, hearts racing a bit, the sight of those classic cobbled streets and the quay sparkling in the late afternoon sun had us grinning like kids.

Our spot was this cracking two-bed apartment right by the quay on Quay Hill – perfect for us two and the little ones, with that easy, lived-in style that makes you feel at home straight away. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and wandered out, already buzzing about what hidden corners we might stumble upon. Lymington’s got that proper charm, but we weren’t here for the obvious high street haunts; no, we wanted the off-the-beaten-track magic you only find by getting properly lost.

Next morning, we headed out with no real plan, just following our noses along the Solent Way. What started as a casual stroll turned into discovering this tucked-away viewpoint, barely a mile from the apartment, where the Hampshire countryside rolls out like a painting – all rolling hills and sneaky glimpses of the Solent. No crowds, just us and a buzzard circling overhead. The kids went wild pretending it was a pirate lookout, and I couldn’t help but chuckle at how a bit of aimless wandering beats any guidebook route.

Later, we veered off into the New Forest trails on the edge of town – you know, those endless nature paths that twist through ancient woods. Got gloriously lost down a shaded bridleway, emerging at this secret glade where wild ponies grazed right up to our feet. Pure magic, and only about two miles from base. We picnicked there, laughing about my rubbish sense of direction, but honestly, it was the best bit – that thrill of unearthing something no one else seems to know about.

Afternoon took us ambling towards Milford on Sea, just four miles away, but we ditched the main path for a detour through hushed back lanes. Stumbled on a row of those pastel beach huts hugging the shingle, empty save for one selling the freshest fish and chips you could imagine. Sat there as the sun dipped, waves lapping, feeling like we’d gatecrashed someone’s private paradise. No queues, no fuss – just us, salty chips, and the sea breeze.

Reflecting on it now, over a quiet pint in one of those traditional country pubs back in Lymington, I realised getting lost was the whole point. In our rush-a-day lives, we forget how brilliant it is to let go and let the New Forest work its quiet wonders. This Quay Hill stay was the ideal launchpad for it all – close to the action yet spilling over with those accidental gems. If you’re a couple or small family after proper escape, pack your wellies and get wandering. You won’t regret it.
