About New Forest
Our stylish first-floor apartment was a gem, tucked quietly off the bustling high street in vibrant Lyndhurst, the self-proclaimed capital of the New Forest. Centrally located but blissfully peaceful, it felt like we’d scored the best of both worlds – amazing eateries right on the doorstep. We dumped the bags and headed straight out, stomachs rumbling. First character encounter: Barry at the King’s Arms pub, two doors down. Proper local, with a beard that could hide a family of squirrels and stories longer than a New Forest cycle path. “You here for the ponies or the porkies?” he winked, pulling a pint. Turned out ‘porkies’ meant the tall tales he and his mates spin about the forest’s ghosts. Over fish and chips, he regaled us with how his nan once outstared a stallion blocking her milk float. We laughed till our sides hurt, promising to keep an eye peeled for those wild horses and donkeys on our walks. Barry’s the sort who makes you feel like you’ve known him forever – quirky, warm, and utterly Lyndhurst. Next morning, fuelled by Barry’s tip, we wandered into the forest on foot. That’s when we met eccentric Elsie, cycling past with a basket of homemade fudge. “Fancy a taste, dearies? Keeps the midges at bay!” she trilled, pressing squares on us before vanishing into the trees. Her chatter about spotting kingfishers by the bog was gold – we did see a donkey family later, munching hedges like they were at a buffet. Elsie’s fizz had us reflecting gently: holidays like this remind you how a quick yarn with a stranger can recharge the soul more than any spa day. Afternoon brought thrills closer to home – a saunter to Paultons Park, just down the road, home of Peppa Pig World. Queueing for rides, we bumped into thrill-seeker Tom, a local dad with neon socks and a grin wider than the splash pool. “First time? Hold tight on the coaster – it’s faster than a pony stampede!” He wasn’t wrong; we whooped like kids, bonding over ice creams and his tales of forest bike mishaps (he once swerved for a deer and ended in a bramble bush). Tom’s infectious energy turned a family park into our personal adventure. Evenings back at the flat were for people-watching the high street parade – the butcher with his daily pony puns, the café owner dishing gossip about celebrity spotters. Lyndhurst’s characters wove magic into every moment, making our stay unforgettable. Selfishly, I wondered why I don’t chat more back home – these encounters were the real thrill. If you’re pondering a New Forest jaunt, book it. The locals? They’re the heart of it all. |
