About New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to Burley in the New Forest – we’d packed the car to the roof with kids’ wellies, snacks, and enough board games to survive a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just as we hit the A31. It rerouted us down some narrow lane that felt more like a pony path than a road, and there we were, inching along behind a family of wild donkeys who’d clearly claimed right of way. The little ones were in hysterics, pressing their faces against the windows, while I gripped the wheel muttering about technology’s betrayal. But honestly, that mishap set the perfect tone – chaotic, silly, and utterly New Forest.

By the time we crunched up the gravel lane to our double-fronted holiday apartment, the anticipation was buzzing. Tucked right on the edge of Burley village, it looked like it had been waiting just for us: cosy, welcoming, and spot-on for a family getaway. First impressions? Magic. We tumbled out, bags flying everywhere, and the kids immediately dashed off to explore the garden while we unlocked the door to that homely scent of fresh linen and possibility. It’s the sort of place that wraps you up like a favourite jumper – nothing flashy, just right for kicking back.

Burley itself is a gem, that proper New Forest village vibe with its cluster of independent shops, cafes, and pubs all spilling out charm. We wandered down straight away, grabbing cream teas at one of the tearooms where the scones were still warm, and the kids went wide-eyed at the ‘witchy’ shops nodding to Sybil Leek’s legacy – crystal stalls and potion bottles that had them whispering about spells all afternoon. No need for grand plans; the wild ponies and donkeys mooching about the streets were entertainment enough. One cheeky donkey even tried nicking my husband’s pasty outside the pub – cue laughter and a hasty retreat.

Days blurred into the best kind of relaxed rhythm. We hired bikes from the village and pedalled gentle bridleways, dodging ponies and picnicking under ancient oaks. Mornings meant lazy brekkies in the apartment, flipping pancakes while the kids built dens from cushions. Afternoons were for village potters – ice creams from the parlour, a pint in the pub garden watching the world go by. One evening, we caught a family of deer grazing right by the lane at dusk; the kids froze in awe, and I had one of those quiet mum moments, reflecting on how these simple bits – the mud on wellies, the shared giggles over burnt toast – are the real holiday gold. Cottage life’s chaos, with its sandy floors and endless snack demands, somehow recharges you more than any five-star spa.

It was pure family bliss, that unhurried New Forest magic reminding us to slow down and savour the small stuff. We’re already plotting a return – next time, I’m bringing carrots for the donkeys.
