About New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to the New Forest last autumn – that crisp October weekend when the leaves were turning all shades of gold and rust, and the air had that proper nip to it that makes you glad you packed a decent jumper. We’d set off from London full of beans, dreaming of cosy firesides and pumpkin-spiced everything, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a massive flock of sheep decided to stage a sit-in right across the A31. Proper New Forest style, mind – woolly protesters blocking the road, with one cheeky lamb staring us down like it owned the place. We were stuck for half an hour, laughing and snapping pics, but it built the anticipation no end. By the time we rolled into Lymington, I was buzzing to see our spot.

Pulling up to the spacious and well-appointed top-floor flat overlooking Lymington Quay, my first impressions were spot on. The views from those big windows? Magic. yachts bobbing on the water under a sky streaked with autumn sunset, the quay below alive with folks wrapping up against the chill. It felt like stepping into a painting – all that fiery foliage framing the harbour, and the salt-tang breeze whispering promises of adventures.

That seasonal shift really made the whole trip. Mornings started with steaming mugs of tea on the balcony, watching mist roll off the Solent as the trees glowed amber in the low sun. We’d wander down to the quay for fresh crab rolls from the stalls – autumn’s bounty, with the catch tasting even sweeter in that bracing air. One day, we hired bikes and pedalled along the coastal path towards Hurst Castle, the wind whipping our scarves, leaves crunching under tyres. The forest paths were carpeted in fallen colours, perfect for a gentle hike through Buckler’s Hard, where the trees arched overhead like a golden tunnel. It was pure seasonal poetry – not too crowded, just us and the squirrels hoarding nuts.

Evenings were the best bit, though. Back at the flat, we’d cook up a storm in the well-stocked kitchen – roasts with seasonal veg from the Lymington market, where stalls overflowed with apples, squashes, and blackberries we’d picked ourselves on a ramble. Cosied up with the heating on, overlooking the twinkling quay lights, it felt like our own little haven. I had a quiet moment one night, staring out at the moonlit water, thinking how this time of year strips things back – no summer frenzy, just that honest, earthy beauty that makes you appreciate the simple stuff. Me, who’s usually rushing about, actually slowed down.

We even caught the tail end of the Lymington seafood festival vibe, with pop-up stalls dishing out oysters that tasted of the sea’s autumn freshness. A small mishap of our own – I tripped on a root during a forest stroll, ending up with mud up to my knees and a daft grin – but it just added to the charm. That weekend, wrapped in autumn’s embrace, recharged my batteries like nothing else. If you’re pondering a New Forest getaway, go in the fall; it’s when the magic really sparks.
