About New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to Lymington – we’d packed the car to the brim with kids’ wellies, a cooler of picnic snacks, and enough board games to survive a fortnight of rain. Halfway through the New Forest, just past that iconic Rufus Stone, our sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping down a narrow pony track. There we were, dodging free-roaming New Forest ponies who eyed us like we were intruders at their personal buffet, while my other half muttered about trusting technology less than a dodgy weather forecast. A classic family holiday start, eh? But by the time we emerged, laughing it off, the anticipation was buzzing – visions of salty sea air and lazy riverside wanders.

Pulling up to our cute couples retreat – well, it was meant for two, but we made it work for our little tribe – tucked away behind Lymington Quay with the river sparkling beyond, I was smitten straight away. It’s this cosy nook, just a short stroll from the bustle of the sailing town, with its chatter of yachties and fish-and-chip queues. First impressions? Pure magic. The garden gate creaked open to reveal a sun-dappled patio perfect for morning brews, and inside, it felt like stepping into a hug – all welcoming nooks for curling up with a book while the kids dashed about.

We wasted no time settling into that proper cottage life chaos. Mornings kicked off with a potter down to the quay, watching the boats bob and grabbing fresh crab rolls from the market stalls – the sort that drip butter down your chin and make you grin like a fool. The little ones were in heaven, feeding the ducks by the river and hunting for ‘treasure’ (mostly shiny pebbles) along the muddy banks. Afternoons? We’d amble into town, past the Georgian high street with its independent shops selling fudge and sailing gear nobody needs but everyone covets. One day, we hired bikes and cycled the easy Lymington to Hurst Castle trail – flat as a pancake, with views across the Solent that had us all whooping as ferries chugged by.

Evenings brought the best bits: firing up the barbecue for sausages charred just right (with a few singed fingers for authenticity), then piling into the living room for storytelling under fairy lights. There was that hilarious moment when our youngest decided the sofa was a pirate ship, leading to a full-scale pillow fort meltdown – cushions everywhere, and me wondering how we’d ever tidy up. But that’s the joy of it, isn’t it? No grand plans, just those simple pleasures: the rustle of leaves from nearby woods, the tang of salt on the breeze, and the kids’ giggles echoing as the sun dipped low.

Looking back, amid the joyful mess, I had a quiet moment of reflection by the river one evening. Holidays like this remind you it’s not about perfection – it’s the unplanned detours, the sandy footprints, and those shared laughs that stick. We left Lymington with fuller hearts and emptier coolers, already plotting our return. If you’re after a relaxed family break in the New Forest, this is the spot – pure, unpretentious bliss.
