Our holiday in New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to the New Forest – we piled into the car from London, kids buzzing in the back, me navigating with a dodgy sat-nav that decided to have a mid-journey meltdown just past Southampton. “Recalculating,” it kept bleating, while I cursed under my breath and ended up on a narrow lane with ponies eyeing us suspiciously. A classic British road trip mishap, but honestly, it just built the anticipation. By the time we trundled into that quiet hamlet on the edge of Ringwood, about three miles away, I was proper starving and dreaming of a decent cuppa.

Pulling up to this cracking character cottage – all cosy and characterful, sleeping us lot comfortably – we were gobsmacked by the first impressions. Ample parking right outside, and stepping into the hall felt like coming home. Those bay windows in the sitting room framed the garden and brook views perfectly, but it was the kitchen that had me grinning like a fool. Double electric oven, dishwasher – the works. I could already picture rustling up a feast without the usual holiday stress.

First night, we didn’t waste time. I fancied playing chef, so raided the local Ringwood market the next morning – it’s been going since medieval times, proper bustling with stalls groaning under fresh veg, artisan cheeses, and those plump Hampshire sausages that smell like heaven. Grabbed some local pork, new potatoes, and a bundle of herbs, then back to base for a crack at roasties and gravy. The kids helped (read: made a mess), and we sat round that massive dining table, woodburner crackling, tucking in while watching deer amble by the garden. Proper heartwarming, though I’ll admit my Yorkshire puds were a bit flat – gentle reminder that I’m no MasterChef, more like a happy amateur.

Pub grub became our religion. There’s a gem just a short hop in Ringwood, along the River Avon, serving up pints of Ringwood ale (brewed right there, naturally) and plates of pie that could convert a vegan. We went twice – once for a ploughman’s lunch with crumbly cheddar and pickled onions, the kids hoovering up fish fingers like pros. Another evening, I attempted a pasta bake in the kitchen, using market-fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, but it turned into a cheesy sludge. Laughs all round, washed down with elderflower cordial on the patio, overlooking the paddocks where the deer popped by for their evening graze.

One highlight was a family breakfast alfresco – I scrambled eggs from the market, fried up bacon rashers, and we slathered toast with local honey. Sat there in the dark skies of the Forest, planning the day over brews. Even tried my hand at a brookside picnic with cheese platters and crusty bread from the bakery stall. Self-reflection hit me then: holidays like this aren’t about perfect cooking; it’s the shared faffing about, the market banter with locals, and those simple meals that stick with you.

Evenings wound down with takeaways from a Ringwood chippy – cod and chips, mushy peas, the full works – devoured by the stove. No fancy restaurants needed; this spot’s all about that easy, hearty New Forest nosh. If you’re after a getaway where food’s the star, you won’t go wrong here. We left fatter, happier, and already plotting the next feast.
