Our holiday in New Forest
I’ll never forget the drive down to the New Forest – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Southampton turned into a right faff with the sat-nav losing its marbles. We’d been chugging along the A31, windows down, tunes blaring, when the bloody thing decided to reroute us through some narrow B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Branches scraping the roof, my other half muttering about “one more shortcut,” and then – splat – a rogue pheasant decided to audition for the windscreen. No harm done, thank goodness, but we pulled over in a layby near Fordingbridge, hearts racing, laughing like loons as we checked for feathers. By the time we spotted the turning for the property, I was buzzing with that mix of exhaustion and excitement, wondering if the place would live up to the photos.

Pulling up to this cosy coach house – all tucked away in a quiet spot just outside Fordingbridge – it was love at first sight. The garden wrapped around it like a hug, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and those massive oaks framing the view like nature’s own welcome committee. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, still giggling about our feathered friend, and the door swung open to this warm, inviting space that screamed “kick off your shoes and stay a while.” It’s got that perfect holiday-let vibe: open-plan living with a kitchen that’s got everything you need for a fry-up, comfy sofas begging for a collapse, and huge windows letting in the forest light. First impressions? Spot on. I plonked myself on the terrace with a cuppa, breathing in that fresh woodland air, and thought, “This is it – proper escapism.”

The chaos of arrival only made it sweeter. We’d packed like we were off to the Arctic – wellies, binoculars, enough snacks to feed the New Forest ponies – and unpacking felt like Christmas. Kids dashed straight out to the garden, spotting deer grazing just beyond the fence, while I pottered about, firing up the barbecue for sausages later. A quick wander down the lane took us to a shaded path into the woods, alive with birdsong and the rustle of leaves. No traffic hum, just pure peace. That evening, as the sun dipped low, painting everything golden, we munched on local cheeses from the village shop, watching ponies amble by. It hit me then, in a quiet moment of self-reflection: life’s too short for perfect plans. That sat-nav debacle? Best thing that happened – turned a simple trip into an adventure, reminding me why I love these spontaneous getaways.

Next morning, we were up early for a cycle along the nearby trails – hired bikes from a spot in Fordingbridge, easy as pie. Gliding through ancient trees, past bubbling streams, it felt like stepping into a storybook. We picnicked by the River Avon, just a short pedal away, dodging the odd pony who eyed our sandwiches hopefully. Back at the coach house, unwinding with board games and a log fire (it was a crisp autumn evening), I couldn’t stop smiling. Sure, the arrival was a muddle of wrong turns and wildlife cameos, but those first impressions sealed it: this corner of the New Forest is magic. If you’re after a proper reset, hunt down a gem like this – mishaps and all, it’s worth every scraped branch.
