Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Middleton Stoney last month – we’d piled into the car from London, full of that fizzy holiday excitement, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into some random country lane detour courtesy of roadworks near Bicester. There I was, white-knuckling the wheel, while my mate Dave in the passenger seat helpfully announced we were “utterly lost” every two minutes. A classic me moment: overpacking the boot with enough snacks to feed an army, then nearly running out of petrol because I’d ignored the low-fuel warning. But honestly, that little mishap turned out to be the best bit – it forced us to slow down and stumble on the proper hidden gems of Oxfordshire.

Pulling up to this cracking four-bedroom holiday home in the heart of the village felt like striking gold. Off-road parking sorted, we wandered into an enclosed garden with a bubbling hot tub that screamed relaxation, and just a stone’s throw from the local shop and pub. Inside, the open-plan living space hit us like a warm hug – everything you need for a self-catered jaunt, from the well-stocked kitchen where we whipped up a massive pasta feast, to the dining table perfect for clinking glasses of fizz and plotting our off-the-beaten-path adventures. First impressions? Spot on. We were buzzing for what lay ahead.

The real magic kicked off the next morning when we decided to ditch the obvious tourist traps and just wander. Aiming for a vague “nice walk” near the village, we took a wrong turn down a leafy footpath and ended up at this tucked-away pond I’d never heard of – apparently a local secret for spotting kingfishers darting about. We sat there for ages, thermos of tea in hand, laughing at how we’d accidentally gatecrashed nature’s VIP lounge. That set the tone: getting lost became our superpower.

Later, pedalling rented bikes from the village (cheeky shortcut to burning off last night’s curry), we veered off the main drag and discovered a forgotten orchard path leading to a wildflower meadow. Blanket down, picnic out – it was one of those moments where you think, “Why don’t I do this more often?” I caught myself reflecting on how city life had me rushing everywhere, missing these quiet joys. No crowds, just us and the hum of bees.

Evenings were for ambling to the pub down the road, where locals swapped tales of secret spots – like a hidden viewpoint over the Cherwell Valley, just a mile’s ramble away. We found it at dusk one night, the sky turning all pink and golden, hot tub waiting back home to soothe our weary legs. Another day, a “shortcut” through woods led to an old stone bridge perfect for paddling, kids splashing about like it was their private beach.

Staying here reminded me holidays aren’t about ticking boxes, but those serendipitous detours that stick with you. If you fancy proper Oxfordshire magic minus the hordes, get yourself lost in Middleton Stoney – you won’t regret it.
