Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I finally made it to that little corner of Oxfordshire after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M40. I'd programmed the sat-nav for Bicester, but it decided to take me on a detour through some winding back lanes that had me white-knuckling the steering wheel past a rogue sheep blocking the road. A classic British countryside welcome, innit? Fifteen minutes of mild panic later, I spotted the quiet country lane sign and breathed a sigh of relief. Pulling up, my heart did a little flip – there it was, this spacious cottage tucked away with those rolling countryside views stretching out like a proper postcard. First impressions? Spot on. It screamed 'switch off and unwind' from the moment I stepped through the gate.

Accessed off that peaceful lane, it's the ideal spot for ditching the daily grind, with Oxford just 10 miles off if you fancy a cultured wander, Blenheim Palace a quick 8-mile jaunt for a bit of history, and Bicester's buzzing with pubs, eateries, and even two train stations for nipping to London or Birmingham in under an hour. Bicester Village outlet is practically on the doorstep at 2.5 miles if shopping calls, but honestly? Who needs it when you've got this haven?

The joy of the whole trip was doing bugger all – and I mean that in the best possible way. After unpacking (which took all of five minutes), I flopped into the garden with a cuppa and a dog-eared paperback. The sun filtered through the trees, birds were chirping away like they were auditioning for a nature doc, and I just... sat there. No emails pinging, no deadlines looming. Lazy cottage days don't get much better. Mornings blurred into birdwatching from the patio, afternoons into dozing with a book on my lap – I devoured three novels in four days, something I haven't managed since uni. Evenings? A simple supper from the local farm shop (picked up en route, naturally), then back to the garden as the light faded, glass of wine in hand, watching the fields turn golden.

There was this one moment, sprawled on a lounger mid-afternoon, when it hit me – gently, like a nudge from an old mate. I'd been rushing through life lately, always chasing the next thing. Here, staring at nothing but hedgerows and sky, I realised slowing down isn't lazy; it's bloody essential. A bit of self-reflection with zero pressure – who knew a cottage could be a therapist?

We did venture out once, just a gentle stroll to a nearby pub in Bicester for a ploughman's and a pint, but mostly it was hammock time, garden gazing, and that delicious art of pottering. No grand adventures, no itineraries – just pure, unadulterated chill. If you're knackered from the grind, book something like this. Trust me, you'll thank me when you're finally breathing easy.
