Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive to our holiday spot in Oxfordshire – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from London turned into a comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us down a narrow lane that pinched tighter than my skinny jeans after Christmas dinner. We ended up wedged behind a tractor chugging along at snail’s pace, the kids in the back chanting “Are we there yet?” like a broken record. By the time we spotted the turning off the Burford road, I was gripping the wheel like it owed me money, heart racing with that mix of exhaustion and bubbling excitement. Would it live up to the photos? Or had we booked ourselves into a rustic disaster?

Pulling up just before noon, the first glimpse hit me like a warm hug. There it was, this gorgeous 17th-century barn conversion, all honeyed walls glowing in the weak winter sun, nestled right in the Cotswolds heartland near Burford. We’d been anticipating this countryside escape for weeks – dreams of log fires and lazy mornings – and honestly, it didn’t disappoint from the off. The owners had left a cheeky welcome basket on the doorstep: fresh scones, clotted cream, and a bottle of local sparkling wine. I nearly dropped it fumbling with the keys, still flustered from the road rage, but popping that cork felt like the universe saying, “Chill out, mate.”

Stepping inside was pure magic. The place sleeps up to 11 with four cracking bedrooms over two floors, perfect for our ragtag crew of family and mates. We spilled in like an overexcited herd, bags everywhere, kids claiming bunks while I surveyed the homey kitchen – massive range cooker begging for a Sunday roast, and that old fireplace just screaming for a blaze. We got one going straight away, flames crackling as we thawed out with mugs of tea. First impressions? Spot on. It’s got that seamless mix of history and hammock-level comfort, ideal for groups like ours who want to flop about without feeling cramped.

The real joy kicked in that afternoon. A short stroll took us to Langford’s duck pond, where the little ones fed the waddlers amid giggles, then we wandered the leafy lanes back, dodging a sudden shower that had us scarpering indoors laughing. Dinner was a chaotic feast of pie and mash rustled up in the kitchen, everyone crammed round the big table swapping stories. I caught myself in a quiet moment by the fire, glass in hand, thinking how daft I’d been to stress the drive – this was proper downtime, the kind that stitches you back together.

Next morning, we ambled over to Burford’s high street, just a couple of miles away, nabbing pasties from the bakery and browsing quirky shops. The barn felt like home already, cosy nooks for reading, space for board games till late. Sure, the arrival was a right faff, but it made the first impressions all the sweeter – a reminder that the best holidays start with a bit of mess, don’t they? If you’re after a quintessential Cotswolds retreat close to the action, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
