About Oxfordshire
Pulling up, my first impressions were spot on – this tucked-away self-catering cottage is an absolute charmer, right in the heart of Oxford yet somehow worlds away from the bustle. A stone's throw from the university spires and those grand theatres, it promises tranquillity with all the convenience you could want. I stepped inside, bags barely dropped, and just breathed it in: spacious, private, with those thoughtful little touches that make you feel instantly at home. But honestly, the real joy? Doing sod all. After months of rushing about, this was my chance to switch off completely. The first morning, I woke to birdsong filtering through the windows, made a pot of tea strong enough to stand your spoon in, and flopped into the garden with a book. It's a proper suntrap out there, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and I spent hours just reading – lost in some daft detective novel I'd been saving. No itinerary, no alarms, just the rustle of pages and the odd bee buzzing by. Lunch was a lazy affair: fresh bread from the nearby Covered Market (a five-minute wander), cheese, and whatever was in the fridge, eaten sprawled on a lounger. Afternoons blurred into the same blissful rhythm. I'd potter about the garden, maybe deadhead a flower or two if I felt ambitious, then retreat with a cuppa and my Kindle. One day, I even managed a nap under the shade of a tree – proper deep sleep, the kind where you wake up disorientated and wonderfully refreshed. Evenings were for slow cooking: pasta bubbling away while I sipped wine, windows open to catch the chatter from Paradise Street. No theatre trips or museum marathons for me this time; the city was close enough to tease, but I was content letting the world spin on without me. Reflecting on it now, over a week later, I realise how rare that slowness feels. Life's always go-go-go, isn't it? Chasing deadlines, ticking boxes. Here, in that little Oxford haven, I gave myself permission to pause. No grand adventures, just me, the garden, and a stack of books – and it was perfect. If you're after a getaway that recharges rather than exhausts, find yourself a spot like this. I might just book it again before someone else snaps it up. |
