Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to that holiday spot in Oxfordshire – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, maps, and enough crisps to siege a castle, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a muddy farm track just outside Chipping Norton. Heart in my mouth, I reversed us out while the kids cheered like it was a rollercoaster, and somehow we arrived without needing a tow truck. As we pulled up, my anticipation bubbled over; the place looked every bit the dream – two beautiful cottages combined into one cosy haven on the Heath Farm Estate, nestled in rolling countryside that screamed ‘perfect for family get-togethers and proper memories’.

First impressions? Spot on. The views stretched out like a postcard, with sheep dotting the hills and that fresh country air hitting you straight away. We couldn’t wait to lace up our boots and hit the trails – Oxfordshire’s got some cracking walks right on the doorstep, and this spot’s a walker’s paradise.

Day one dawned bright, so off we went on a cracking hike along the nearby paths towards Rollright Stones, just a couple of miles away. The sun warmed our backs as we wandered through wildflower meadows and past ancient hedgerows buzzing with bees. The kids raced ahead, pretending to be explorers, and I felt that rare parent-win of everyone being happy and knackered in the best way. We picnicked by a babbling stream, feet dangling in the cool water – pure bliss.

But oh, British weather, you cheeky devil. Next morning, the sky turned moody faster than a teenager, lashing rain that turned our planned ramble to the Evenlode Valley into a soggy scramble. Plans? Out the window. We donned waterproofs and embraced the mudfest anyway, slipping and giggling our way along the estate’s own trails. It was gloriously daft – one minute dodging puddles the size of ponds, the next hiding under a massive oak as thunder grumbled overhead. The kids built dams in the streams, faces smeared with mud, while I huffed up a sneaky hill, wondering why I hadn’t packed more chocolate for morale.

By afternoon, the clouds parted like they’d had a telling-off, and we struck out again, this time looping back through woodland paths fringed by the Cotswold edges. Golden light filtered through the trees, turning puddles into mirrors, and we spotted deer darting away – magic. That evening, nursing blisters by the fire, I had a quiet moment reflecting on it all. Life’s so frantic back home; out here, even the foul weather forced us to slow down, laugh at the chaos, and just be together. Who needs perfect forecasts when you’ve got paths that lead wherever the day takes you?

Those few days of wet-and-wild walks left us with stories (and laundry) for weeks. If you’re after a spot to ditch the daily grind and let the countryside work its charm, this is it – rain or shine.
