Our holiday in Oxfordshire
First impressions? Blimey, better than I’d dared hope. We stepped inside, bags dumped by the door, and it felt like slipping into a proper haven of tranquillity. No grand plans, no rushing off anywhere – that was the whole point of this getaway. After months of city hustle, I was craving nothing more than to do bugger all, and this place was perfect for it. The garden was the star of the show, really. Enclosed and private, with that lush Oxfordshire greenery rolling out behind. We spent the first morning just lounging on the chairs out there, mugs of tea in hand, listening to the birds and the distant hum of farm life. I cracked open a battered paperback I’d been meaning to read for ages – some light thriller that had me chuckling at the daft plot twists. No deadlines, no notifications pinging; just me, the book, and the odd butterfly flitting past. Lunch was a lazy affair: cheese ploughman’s from the local shop in Chipping Norton, eaten al fresco with a bit of gossip about nothing in particular. Afternoons blurred into that glorious slow-motion haze. I’d wander out to the garden bench, feet up, watching clouds drift over the fields. My partner dozed off with a podcast on low volume, and I’d sneak in a cheeky nap myself. Evenings meant firing up the little barbecue – nothing fancy, just sausages and veg from the farm shop down the road, followed by curling up inside with a glass of wine and more reading by the lamp. The cottage furnishings made it all so effortless; those comfy spots just begged you to sink in and switch off. There was this one moment on day three, sat in the garden as the sun warmed my face, when it hit me – how rarely I let myself properly unwind. Back home, I’m always chasing the next thing, tinkering with to-do lists like it’s a competition. Here? I felt a bit daft for that. Why rush when you can savour the quiet, the simple joy of a breeze rustling the leaves? It was gently humbling, that realisation, like the cottage was whispering, “Take it easy, mate.” By the time we packed up, I didn’t want to leave. Those lazy days recharging in such a peaceful spot – garden lounging, endless reading, pure slowing down – they’re exactly what I needed. If you’re after true relaxation in Oxfordshire, find yourself a gem like this. I’m already plotting a return. |
