Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down to Oxfordshire last month – me behind the wheel of our trusty old estate car, my wife navigating with that app on her phone that kept trying to send us down some farmer’s track. We’d been dreaming of a proper break, just the two of us, away from the daily grind, and about halfway there, disaster struck. A rogue pheasant decided our windscreen was its personal trampoline. Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and my wife laughing so hard she nearly dropped her thermos of tea. We pulled over near Chipping Norton, gave the car a once-over (fine, miraculously), and carried on, both of us giggling like kids. That little mishap somehow set the tone – a reminder that holidays are for embracing the chaos, not stressing over it.

By the time we trundled up the drive to our holiday spot on the Heath Farm Estate, the anticipation was bubbling over. Nestled in Swerford, it’s one of those places that looks even better in real life than in the photos – a picturesque haven promising unrivalled peace and tranquility, complete with its own private garden, a sunken hot tub, and spectacular views that make you forget the world exists. First impressions? Spot on. We stepped out into crisp country air, bags barely unpacked, and just stood there soaking it in. No traffic hum, no neighbours mowing lawns – just birdsong and the gentle rustle of leaves. Proper bliss.

We’d booked it for that relaxed couple vibe, and it delivered in spades. Mornings kicked off slow: brewing coffee in the cosy kitchen, then spilling out into the garden with toast and marmalade, watching the mist lift over the fields. One day, we wandered a short stroll to the nearby footpaths – typical Oxfordshire countryside, with those rolling hills and hedgerows bursting with blackberries. We picked a handful (well, I picked, she photographed), and turned them into a slightly lumpy crumble that evening. Cottage life chaos at its finest – flour on the floor, a burnt edge or two, but honestly, the best pud we’ve had in ages.

Afternoons were for simple pleasures. That hot tub became our personal spa – sinking in with a GandT as the sun dipped low, chatting about nothing and everything. We even managed a gentle amble to the local pub in Hook Norton, just a couple of miles away, for a ploughman’s and a pint of real ale. No grand plans, no rushing – that’s the magic. One evening, as we watched the sunset from the garden, painting the sky in pinks and oranges, I had a quiet moment of self-reflection. Life’s been a whirlwind lately – work, kids (now off at uni), the usual treadmill. Here, staring at those views, I realised how much we needed this. Not some flashy getaway, but this unhurried rhythm, reminding us why we’re together.

Sure, there were hiccups – the wi-fi dropped out (bliss, really), and I nearly tripped over the garden hose chasing a butterfly. But that’s the charm of it all. We left feeling recharged, already plotting our return. If you’re after true relaxation in beautiful Oxfordshire, this is the spot. Proper recommend.
