Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I’ll never forget the drive down from London to Oxfordshire last month – smooth sailing until I took a wrong turn near Chipping Norton and ended up on a single-track lane that felt like it was leading to Narnia. Mud splattered the windscreen, and I was convinced we’d end up in a ditch, but we emerged laughing, right on time for check-in. Pulling up to this standalone house set in 440 acres of historic parkland on the Heythrop Park Estate, my heart did a little flip. From the sweeping views, it looked like the perfect Cotswolds bolthole – all privacy and promise.

First impressions? Spot on. The place sleeps eight comfortably across four bedrooms, with that calm, characterful vibe inside – think retro touches and soft textures that make you want to kick off your shoes. But honestly, from the moment we unpacked, it was all about the food. The kitchen’s a dream for wannabe chefs like me: massive range cooker, every gadget imaginable, and space to chop without elbows knocking. We’d stocked up at Daylesford’s organic farm shop just down the road – their cheeses, fresh breads, and those insanely good pastries. I fancied myself a MasterChef that first evening, attempting a roast with local pork from the butcher in Chipping Norton. It was a triumph... mostly. The crackling was perfect, but the veg came out a tad soggy. Still, gathered round the dining table for eight, with wine flowing, no one complained.

Mornings kicked off with lazy breakfasts on the rooftop terrace, overlooking the estate. We’d fire up the outdoor kitchen for bacon sarnies using rashers from the Saturday market in town – proper thick-cut, smoky ones that taste of countryside. One day, I tried my hand at homemade granola with Daylesford honey and nuts; turned out surprisingly decent, if I say so myself. Self-reflection moment: I’m not half bad in the kitchen when there’s no pressure, but back home, it’s usually a rushed microwave job. This holiday forced me to slow down and actually enjoy it.

Evenings were for the garden setup – firepit crackling, pizza oven blazing. We experimented with dough from the local bakery, topping pizzas with mozzarella and wild rocket from the estate paths (okay, we foraged a bit). The wood-fired hot tub and sauna hut afterwards? Pure bliss, especially after a gentle stroll to the nearby pub. The Chequers in Chipping Norton is a gem – we stumbled in for pints and their legendary Sunday roasts, all golden Yorkshire puds and gravy you could swim in. Another night, it was ploughman’s with crumbly Cotswold cheese and pickled onions that had us moaning in delight.

We hit the Daylesford café too, for coffee and their salads packed with seasonal veg – beetroot and goat’s cheese that I tried recreating back at the house (nailed it, second time around). Meals drove everything: long lunches plotting the next feast, evenings debating pub vs. pizza oven. It was indulgent, restorative, and a reminder that good food with good company is the real holiday magic. If you’re after a base to eat, drink, and switch off in Oxfordshire, this is it. We left fuller, happier, and already plotting a return.
