Our holiday in Oxfordshire
I finally made it to this cosy holiday cottage in Faringdon after what felt like the scenic route from hell – or at least from the M4, which is close enough. I'd been buzzing with anticipation all week, picturing lazy afternoons in the garden with a cuppa, exploring the gentle Oxfordshire countryside without a care. But no, my trusty old Sat Nav decided to play silly buggers just as I hit the A420. It rerouted me down some narrow lane that was more pothole than path, and I ended up doing a three-point turn in front of a bemused farmer on his tractor. "Welcome to the Vale of White Horse," I muttered to myself, chuckling at the irony as mud splattered my windscreen. Typical me, turning a straightforward drive into an episode of Last of the Summer Wine.

By the time I pulled up outside the property – a charming detached cottage with that classic English quirkiness, all flower baskets and welcoming porch – I was knackered but grinning like an idiot. The first impressions? Pure magic. The sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the private garden, and there it was: my little haven, tucked away in a quiet spot just on the edge of town. I fumbled with the key safe (note to self: always check the code twice next time), and as the door swung open, the smell of fresh linen hit me. Bliss. It was one of those places that feels like slipping into a favourite jumper – compact but spot-on, with a kitchen that had everything from a proper Aga vibe to a fridge stocked with local milk. I dumped my bags and collapsed onto the sofa, staring out at the birds flitting about. After the road chaos, it was like the universe saying, "See? Worth it."

That evening, I wandered into Faringdon for a mooch – it's only a short stroll away, and the high street was buzzing with that proper market-town charm. Grabbed fish and chips from a no-nonsense chippy, then ambled back as the streetlights flickered on. Sat in the garden with my supper, watching the sunset over the fields, I couldn't help a bit of gentle self-reflection. Lately, I've been rushing about like a headless chicken at work, always chasing the next deadline. Here, with the mishaps already fading into a funny story, I realised how much I needed this reset. No emails, no alarms – just me, a good book, and the soft hum of the countryside.

Next morning, I headed to nearby Uffington, barely a ten-minute drive, for a proper leg-stretch up to the White Horse hill figure. The views were cracking, all rolling downs and ancient mystery, and I picnicked at the top like a kid. Back at the cottage, I fired up the BBQ (garden's perfect for it, enclosed and sunny), cracked open a cider, and just... breathed. The little patio table became my office for doodling ideas, and honestly, the arrival kerfuffle made every moment sweeter. If you're after a slice of Oxfordshire calm with easy access to pubs like the Crown in Faringdon or a gentle cycle around the local paths, this is the spot. Already plotting my return – Sat Nav be damned.
