Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Walberton last month – one of those classic British road trips where everything starts so promisingly. We’d packed the car with snacks, a playlist of summery tunes, and that giddy anticipation of escaping the daily grind. Sussex was calling, with its rolling hills and promise of proper downtime. But ten miles from our turn-off, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with the windscreen. No harm done, thank goodness – just a feathery fright and a quick stop to shake it off, laughing at our city-slicker nerves. By the time we trundled into the village, we were buzzing with relief and ready for whatever lay ahead.

Pulling up to this welcoming wooden lodge on the owners’ farm felt like stumbling into a hug from an old mate. Tucked away in Walberton, it’s the sort of spot couples dream of – cosy, unpretentious, and perfectly placed for forgetting the world exists. First impressions? Spot on. The garden wrapped around us like a green embrace, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and those South Downs views stretching out like a painting you never want to leave. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of cold ones from the local shop, and just... exhaled.

The joy of it all was doing sod all, really. No grand itineraries, no ticking off castles or racecourses – though Arundel’s skyline winked at us from four miles away, and Chichester’s cathedral spire tempted from seven and a half. Nah, we were here to slow right down. Mornings kicked off with lazy brekkies on the patio, toast slathered in marmalade, watching sheep amble across the farm fields. I’d flop into a lounger with a dog-eared paperback – some cracking historical yarn I’d been meaning to read for ages – while she pottered in the garden, deadheading roses and chatting to the birds. “This is the life,” she’d say, and I’d grunt agreement from behind my shades, secretly chuffed we’d finally learned to switch off.

Afternoons blurred into that golden haze of nothing-much. A gentle stroll along the local footpaths, hand in hand, breathing in the earthy South Downs air – no rush, no distance, just the crunch of gravel and the odd butterfly flitting by. Back at the lodge, it was feet up with tea and biscuits, maybe a cheeky nap when the sun hit that sweet spot through the trees. Evenings? Cosy dinners thrown together from the village shop – fresh bread, local cheese, a bottle of something cheeky – eaten al fresco as the sky turned pink. One night, staring at the stars popping out over the farm, I had a proper moment of self-reflection. Blimey, I thought, we’re always rushing about, chasing the next thing. Here, in this little pocket of Sussex, time stretched out lazy as a cat in the sun. Why don’t we do this more often?

Fontwell’s just down the road if you fancy a flutter, Goodwood’s not far for the motorsport buzz, and those South Coast beaches from five miles away scream ice cream and sea breezes. But us? We savoured the stillness. Walberton worked its magic – a reminder that the best holidays are the ones where you barely leave the garden. Can’t wait to go back and do even less.
