Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Binsted last weekend – the A27 was its usual chaotic self, and just past Chichester, we hit a massive tailback from some roadworks. What should’ve been a breezy hour from the motorway turned into a two-hour crawl, with me drumming my fingers on the steering wheel, fantasising about a cold pint at the village inn. But as we finally trundled into this tucked-away gem beside the golf course, all that frustration melted away. The late summer sun was dipping low, casting this golden glow over the fairways, and there it was: our cosy two-bedroomed cottage, all welcoming with its flower baskets still bursting despite the season’s turn.

Stepping inside, the first impressions were spot on – warm, lived-in vibes with everything you need for a proper unwind. We’d timed it perfectly for that shoulder season magic in West Sussex, where the crowds have thinned but the weather’s still playing ball. No scorching heatwaves or soggy downpours; just crisp mornings and balmy afternoons that made the South Downs look like a painting. That first evening, we wandered the 100 yards to the village inn for fish and chips – proper portions, mind, with mushy peas that hit the spot after our delayed arrival. Sat outside under the fading light, watching golfers tee off in the distance, I couldn’t help but chuckle at how I’d been grumbling in the car just hours before. Proper daft, really.

The next day, we laced up our boots for the South Downs – it’s a walker’s paradise right on the doorstep, with footpaths snaking through those rolling hills. Late summer brought out the best: purple heather carpeting the slopes, butterflies flitting about, and not a soul in sight. We did a gentle circuit, breathing in that earthy scent as the sun warmed our backs, stopping for a picnic of local cheese and crusty bread. It felt like the landscape was winding down with us, all mellow and golden, before autumn proper kicks in. Back at the cottage, we lit the fire (yes, even in late summer evenings can turn chilly) and planned our coastal jaunt.

Climping Beach, just four miles away, was calling – perfect for a spot of windsurfing watching and a proper beach ramble. The sea was that steely blue of late season, waves lively but not wild, and we poked along the shore, eyes peeled for anything shiny (metal detecting’s big here, apparently). Littlehampton’s harbour was buzzing too, with boats bobbing and ice cream stalls still open – we grabbed cones and wandered the beaches, the air tangy with salt and that faint hint of approaching equinox chill. It was brilliant how the time of year softened everything; no summer hordes, just space to breathe and chat about nothing much.

Even Arundel, a quick four-mile hop, shone differently in this light. The castle loomed dramatic against the hazy sky, and the cafes spilled out onto pavements with that easy, end-of-season lazy feel. We mooched through independent shops, picking up fudge and a quirky print, reflecting on how these little escapes recharge the batteries. Me? I’m usually rushing about back home, but out here, with the golf course whispering ‘relax’ and the Downs stretching forever, I had a proper moment of clarity: life’s too short not to savour these seasonal shifts. We left buzzing, already plotting a return for autumn’s fiery colours. If you’re after that sweet spot between summer’s buzz and winter’s hush, this corner of Sussex delivers every time.
