About Sussex
I’ll never forget the drive down to West Sussex for our little getaway – what was meant to be a smooth two-hour jaunt from London turned into a comedy of errors thanks to my hopeless sat-nav skills. Picture this: me, squinting at the screen while my partner, Sarah, dozes in the passenger seat, and suddenly we’re arguing with a robotic voice that’s insisting we take a detour through some godforsaken B-road. Cue the classic British downpour, windscreen wipers on full whack, and me missing the turn for Hunston village by a good mile. We ended up splashing through puddles in the middle of nowhere, hearts sinking as the fuel light flickered on. “This is it,” I thought, “holiday ruined before it’s even started.” But honestly, that chaotic arrival only made the relief sweeter when we finally rolled up.

Pulling into the drive of this cosy single-storey hideaway just outside Hunston, I felt that proper flutter of anticipation – you know, the one where you imagine curling up with a cuppa after all the faff. And blimey, it didn’t disappoint. The place is a proper rural gem, tucked away in peaceful countryside that instantly washed away the M25 stress. It’s perfect for four, with that welcoming vibe that screams “kick off your shoes and relax” – ideal for us lot, a small family with two nippers in tow, though it’d suit couples just as well. First impressions? Spot on. The garden wrapped around us like a hug, birds chirping away, and not a whiff of traffic noise. We tumbled out of the car, soggy but grinning, and within minutes were sorted with keys and a quick tour that had us oohing and aahing.

That first evening, after drying off and cracking open a bottle of local Sussex fizz (grabbed from Chichester on the way, naturally), we just soaked it in. The open-plan setup meant we could sprawl out, kids playing while Sarah and I plotted the next day. Speaking of which, the location is a dream – a quick three-mile hop to Chichester, with its stunning cathedral and those ancient Roman walls begging for a wander. We mooched into town the next morning, past lovely shops and grabbed fish and chips from a spot that’s been there donkey’s years. The harbourside parks were brilliant for the little ones, skimming stones and spotting ducks.

But it was the walks that stole the show. We ambled along the Chichester Canal path, mud-splattered boots and all, laughing about my driving disasters. Pagham Harbour’s wetlands were a stone’s throw too – seals bobbing in the distance, proper nature therapy. Even a jaunt to Selsey beach, just five miles down the road, had us building sandcastles under grey skies that miraculously brightened up. One rainy afternoon, we hunkered down with board games, reflecting on how these simple spots make you realise you don’t need fancy abroad jaunts. Me? I’m the eternal city slicker who forgets how restorative the countryside is – this trip was a gentle nudge to slow down, embrace the mishaps, and make more memories like these. If you’re after a peaceful base with cracking nearby walks and a city on your doorstep, this West Sussex bolthole’s got it in spades. Can’t wait to go back.
