About Sussex
I’ll never forget the drive down to Brighton – we’d packed the car to bursting with kids’ beach toys, cool bags stuffed with picnic odds and ends, and that nagging sense of holiday freedom just around the corner. My wife was navigating on her phone, the kids bickering in the back over who got the window seat, when disaster struck: a massive seagull splattered right across the windscreen just as we hit the A27. Cue panicked swerves, laughter turning to mild panic, and me wiping it off with a half-used baby wipe while muttering about my luck. Still, by the time we trundled into East Sussex, the sun was glinting off the sea, and anticipation bubbled up – this was our first family getaway in ages, and I could already picture lazy beach days ahead.

Pulling up to the beachfront spot had us grinning like idiots. It’s this cracking duplex apartment right on the promenade, all sleek and inviting with that proper seaside vibe. Stepped out of the lift straight into it, and blimey, the views hit you like a wave – endless sea stretching out past the pier, filling every window. Underfoot, the heating was a godsend after our chilly drive, and the open-plan living space just pulled you in, light flooding everywhere, making it feel like the coast was part of the room. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open some fizz while the kids raced to the balcony, noses pressed against the glass.

The next few days melted into that perfect holiday chaos you crave with little ones. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos – pancakes flipped on the hob, syrup everywhere, while we gazed out at the waves crashing below. Then it was down to the beach, just a skip away: building wonky sandcastles that inevitably toppled, paddling in the shallows till our toes went numb, and chasing kites along the pebble shore. Brighton’s got that unpretentious charm – we wandered the Lanes for fudge and quirky shops, the kids wide-eyed at the street performers on the pier. Evenings were pure bliss: fish and chips nabbed from a takeaway nearby, eaten on the balcony as the sun dipped, with seagulls squawking overhead like nosy neighbours.

Of course, it wasn’t all seamless. One afternoon, toddler tantrum met missing bucket, turning a simple rock-pooling session at the marina into a comedy of errors – me on my knees fishing plastic tat out of rock pools while everyone else giggled. But that’s the joy of it, isn’t it? Those cottage-life mishaps that make memories stick. I caught myself one quiet moment, sipping tea on the sofa with the sea twinkling outside, thinking how we’d needed this. Work stress, school runs – all faded. Just us, the waves, and a bit of family madness.

We even squeezed in a mooch around Hove lawns for ice creams and a kickabout, the kids knackered by teatime. Facilities were ace too – plenty of space for everyone to sprawl without tripping over each other. Leaving felt bittersweet, but as we drove off, windscreen mercifully clear, I knew we’d be back. Sussex seaside sorted us proper – simple, sunny, and just chaotic enough.
