About Sussex
I’ll never forget the drive down to Sussex last autumn – the leaves were just starting to turn that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. I’d piled the car with wellies, a Thermos of tea, and enough crisps to siege a castle, buzzing with that pre-holiday anticipation of crisp air and cosy nights in. But typical me, about halfway there, I took a wrong turn onto some narrow lane near Chichester, ending up nose-to-nose with a tractor that looked like it hadn’t moved since the war. Heart in mouth, I reversed into a hedge – no damage, just a few embarrassed waves from the farmer and a soggy passenger side from the drizzle that kicked in right on cue. Laughing it off, we pressed on, the SatNav finally behaving as the hedgerows thickened with autumn’s mellow fruitfulness.

Pulling up to the property, my first impressions were spot on – a charming hayloft conversion on an equestrian smallholding in Chidham village, right in the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the South Downs looming invitingly nearby. It felt like stepping into a postcard: the thatched roof glistening from the morning rain, ponies nickering in the paddock, and open countryside stretching out under a sky heavy with the season’s promise of woodsmoke and frost. Autumn wrapped it all in this magical hush – no summer crowds, just the rustle of falling leaves and the faint tang of bonfires on the breeze.

We wasted no time settling in. Mornings kicked off with brews on the terrace, watching mist lift off the harbour as Canada geese honked their way south. The cooler weather made everything feel more vivid – a brisk walk along the Chidham shoreline, where blackberries hung fat and free on the brambles (I picked a punnet or three, naturally). One afternoon, we hired bikes from a local spot in Bosham – all of two miles away – and pedalled through the harbour paths, the low sun turning the water to molten gold. Muddy tyres and rosy cheeks were the order of the day, and scoffing fresh scones at a tearoom afterwards felt like the perfect reward. The season’s chill sharpened the appetite; nothing beat coming back to stoke the wood burner and simmer a stew with veg from the smallholding’s honesty box.

Evenings were pure bliss, that autumnal cosiness amplifying everything. We’d crack open a bottle of local Rosé from the nearby vineyard – yes, there’s one tucked in the harbour area – and play board games by lamplight as the wind whispered through the trees. One night, a gentle self-reflection hit me over a cuppa: rushing through life in London, I’d forgotten how restorative this slower pace is, especially in autumn’s embrace. It strips away the noise, leaves you with just the essentials – good company, nature’s palette, and a crackling fire.

A day trip to Chichester’s market was a highlight too, mere minutes away. The autumn stalls brimmed with pumpkins, fudge, and hot chestnuts; we wandered the cathedral close, leaves swirling like confetti. No need to venture far – the area’s compact charm kept us rooted in that seasonal glow. Back at the hayloft, watching the ponies graze under harvest moon glow, I felt utterly content. Sussex in autumn? It’s not just a holiday; it’s a love letter to slowing down. Can’t wait to go back next year.
