About Sussex
I finally made it to Littlehampton after what felt like the world's most faffing-about drive from London. Picture this: I'm trundling along the A27 in my trusty old hatchback, radio blaring some classic Radio 2 tunes, when—bam—a rogue seagull decides to audition for a windscreen splatter artist right at the East Preston roundabout. Cue a frantic dash to the nearest services for a liberal squirt of screenwash and a cheeky cuppa to steady the nerves. Still, by the time I pulled into the Beachtown Conservation Area, the sun was peeking through the clouds, and my heart did a little flip of anticipation. What if it was one of those places that looked brilliant in the photos but turned out pokey and damp?

No such worries. Stepping into this ground-floor apartment was like being hugged by a cosy seaside gran. It's got that perfect pet-friendly vibe—I'd brought my well-behaved spaniel, Poppy, who immediately flopped down like she'd owned the place for years. The open-plan kitchen/dining area opens right onto a colourful courtyard garden, all bursting with pots of geraniums and lavender that smelled like summer in a bottle. First impressions? Spot on. I dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local Sussex sparkling wine (cheers to that bubbly from nearby Nyetimber), and just... breathed.

The joy of this holiday was doing precisely bugger all, and loving every lazy minute. Forget ticking off bucket lists or manic sightseeing—Littlehampton's gentle charms are made for slowing right down. Mornings started with me pottering in the kitchen, rustling up a full English on the array of gadgets (that toaster made the crispiest bacon I've had in ages), while Poppy snoozed in a sunbeam. We'd spill out into the courtyard with mugs of builder's tea, me sinking into a lounger with a dog-eared paperback—some light thriller I'd been meaning to read for months. The garden's a proper little haven, walled off from the world, with birds chirping and the faint crash of waves from the nearby beach drifting over. No rush, no schedules. Just the rustle of pages and the odd stretch.

Afternoons blurred into the same blissful rhythm. I'd wander five minutes down to the beach for a paddle in the shallows—cool English Channel water that wakes you up without the shock—then back for a nap on the plush seating in the sitting room. Evenings? Curl up by the open fire (logs from the local shop, dead easy), with a bowl of pasta whipped up by yours truly, pretending to be the chef of the group. Poppy'd snore softly, and I'd stare into the flames, reflecting on how I never switch off at home. Work emails ping, life's a whirl—here, time stretched like toffee. One night, watching the sunset tint the garden pink, I caught myself grinning at nothing. When did I last feel this unhurried?

A few mates joined for a weekend, and we did even less: shared a picnic in the garden, swapped daft stories, read aloud from newspapers bought from the high street. No grand adventures, just the sheer delight of lingering. Leaving felt like cutting short a good dream, but I'll be back—Poppy's already pawing at the car keys. If you're after a coastal escape where the highlight is savouring the nothing-much, this is your spot. Pure, unadulterated slowdown.
