Our trip to Sussex staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Horsham last month – what should’ve been a straightforward two hours from London turned into a comedy of errors when we hit a massive tailback near Gatwick. Some cheeky diversion sign had us looping round the countryside like lost sheep, and by the time we spotted the turning for our holiday cottage, I was starving and my other half was threatening to mutiny over the SatNav’s cheerful lies. Still, as we finally pulled up, that knot of anticipation unravelled into pure delight. Tucked away in a quiet spot just outside town, the cosy detached cottage looked like it was waiting to wrap us in a big hug – all welcoming windows and a garden begging for a cuppa.

First morning, the sun was out, bold as brass, so we laced up our boots for a proper Sussex stomp. There’s something magical about those rolling fields around here; we headed off on the familiar loop from the cottage towards the South Downs, maybe a couple of miles out. The paths were alive with butterflies and the air smelled of fresh-cut grass and wildflowers. We passed a few horses grazing lazily, and I couldn’t help grinning like an idiot – proper countryside bliss, that. We even spotted a fox darting across the trail, which felt like a lucky charm. Lunch was a picnic of cheese ploughman’s from the local farm shop we’d nabbed on arrival, sprawled out by a hedgerow. Bliss.

But oh, British weather – you fickle friend. By afternoon, the sky turned that moody grey, and the heavens opened just as we were midway up a gentle incline with killer views back over Horsham. No dramatic cliffs here, just those lush, undulating hills that make your calves burn in the best way. We hunkered under a massive oak, laughing as rain hammered down, turning the path into a muddy slip-and-slide. “This is character-building!” I yelled over the downpour, while secretly cursing my choice of trainers. We adapted sharpish, ducking into a nearby woodland trail that was blissfully sheltered by ancient trees. The bad weather forced us onto these hidden gems – narrow, twisting paths carpeted in leaves, where the rain pattered like a soothing drumbeat. Emerging damp but triumphant, we trudged home for tea and biscuits, feeling like we’d conquered the elements.

Next day, it was back to blue skies, so we tackled a longer circuit looping past a pretty reservoir not far off, about three miles from the door. Sunshine glinting off the water, birdsong everywhere – it was the perfect tonic after the drenching. Those contrasts are what make Sussex walks so addictive; one minute you’re battling squalls, the next basking in unexpected warmth. I had a quiet moment on a bench overlooking the valley, sipping flask coffee, reflecting on how these simple hikes strip away the city noise. Makes you realise you don’t need grand adventures – just sturdy boots and a waterproof jacket.

By week’s end, we’d clocked miles of mud, sun and everything in between, all without straying far. That cottage was the ideal base for it all – close enough to trails for spontaneous jaunts, cosy enough for rainy afternoons plotting the next outing. If you fancy unplugging with some proper fresh air therapy, Sussex delivers every time. Can’t wait to go back.
